I complain to God of love’s agonies,

And the sighs of separation the heart has enfolded.

I charge the wind with a fragrant greeting

To the valley’s neighbors on the eastern side of al-Liwā.

The breeze blew and enfolded in its fragrance

Their memory—oh, my soul be ransom for what it enfolded!

Love is judged by the intention behind it,

And truly, one has only what one intended.

O people, for God’s sake, we have enfolded love for you

Within hearts whose nature is to forsake all else.

So treat them generously, with compassion

That shields them from the blazing fires of love’s anguish.

In brokenness, they have knocked at your doors,

And brokenness is the way of lovers.
