خُذواtake بيدِby the hand of العبدِthe servant الضَّعيفِthe weak تَكَرُّماًout of generosity
فقدfor indeed ملَّhas grown weary منهof him قوسُهُhis bow ورِكابُهُand his mounts
Graciously take the weak servant by the hand.
For his bow and his mounts have grown weary of him.
غريبٌa stranger عنto الأَكْوانِall creation شطَّgrew distant مَزارُهُhis place of visitation
وقدand indeed طالِhas grown long فيin بِيدِthe deserts of الغَرامِpassion اغْتِرابُهُhis exile
A stranger to all creation, his destination lies far away.
And his exile has grown long in the deserts of passion.

His reproachers have indeed called him to account and gone too far.
So say: “His reckoning in all affairs rests with us.”

And send him back a radiant book from yourselves,
If his book is blackened by those who harbor suspicion.

For you—by the life of love—are his heart's ladder of ascent.
And the savor of love for you is his food and drink.

And his days have indeed grown short through yearning for you,
Just as his reproach of you has grown long—O my love!

And his fire blazed within his ribs,
And his cloud poured forth from his wounded eyelid.

He loved you ardently as a child, a middle-aged man, and a youth,
And as an old man; in loving you, his torment became sweet.

So, were he to die, he would greet you within the folds of his grave,
And his dust would be mad with love for you among the graves.

To you he returns as the eras turn.
