God's peace be upon you—you have gone too far, O Mayy.

For the Rudayni spear from you has pierced the lovers.

Every horseman among them swayed, trembling.

And in loving you, unfolding and folding became sweet to them.

By the right of love, have pity on them, for each of them

Is dead yet alive for your sake, by separation's decree.

    فَها هو بالجَمرِ المُؤَجَّجِ مَشْوِيُّ

    Every heart of theirs has writhed amid ghada embers;

So here it is, roasted on blazing embers.

It seeks union with you, O gazelle of al-Liwa.

So it goes forth, its core struck by arrows.

Indeed, the lovers have melted away in lovesick yearning for you.

So they have no shadow, O Mayy, if they stand.

You veiled yourself from them with your tresses, so they came forward,

And bewilderment from the night of those flowing tresses had engulfed them all.

    لهُ مَوْكبٌ من عَسكَرِ العِشْقِ كُلِّيُّ

    Longing for you has a share in the recesses of their hearts;

It has an entire retinue from the army of love.

The two opposites from you have indeed met in their secret depths.

Thus this moment is visible, and this intent is hidden.

And a wonder it is—and love contains wonders—

Passion for you is eastern and western in its ardor.

It is love: an outward death with an inward one,

From longing—an inevitable fate decreed in lovesick rapture.

It showed itself as secondary in the bearer of its fire,

Yet in the clay of the heart it is innate.

Ah, have mercy on the lovers: they have melted and been burned.

God's peace be upon you—you have gone too far, O Mayy.
