Ah, the fire of his heart, which never ceases

To throb whenever it comes before Salʿ.

    وله العاشق جمرٌ محرقُ

    Its ember burned him with yearning;

    A lover’s yearning is a scorching ember.

O pale camels of the tribe from Kāẓima,

    When the caravan sped away,

Have you heard of a flying heart

With you, beside which the she-camels grew weary?

Have mercy on it, for it and the downpour that

Has streamed from my eye race one another.

All my days are yearning for my love,

And my nights are burning anguish over it.

The lover took a sandy ridge within it,

And I alone am a pattern of my own within it.

So my path in love is unfamiliar,

And the riders of meanings have paths.

I swear, O Mayy, by love and by the one

Who made love an oath that proves true:

I, even if I were cut to pieces for it,

Would never gaze upon the face of any other.

So marvel, O Mayy, at me, that I am

Silent, worn out, while my tears speak.

    أبداً بالسير لا نفترق

    Lamentation and I follow the creed of love;

We never part as we journey.

I knock upon love with a throbbing heart,

So I see tears hammering at my armor.

I watch the lightning; I am not diverted

From it for an instant by Ḥājir or al-Abraq.

I give Burāq a draught of copious water,

Bitter from my tears, and on it I choke.

I ask the caravan about love, but no

One who knows understands what I utter.

So it is as though I were a non-Arab uttering

Among Arabs, sentences they cannot make out.

    دمدمن حين يُلِحَّ الغسقُ

    Give forth, O singer of the wilderness of al-Liwā;

Rumble on when the darkness presses in.

Perhaps we may drown in our own tears.

A waft of their fragrance stirs among us.

My affair with the reproachers is a wonder:

They never saw my suffering without fabricating lies.

God united my outward form through my love,

While they, through delusion, divided it in error.

And indeed they said, ‘The youth has gone mad in vain.’

They lied deliberately, and unknowingly spoke the truth.
