يَعِزُّis hard to bear عَلَيَّfor me فَقدُكَyour loss ياO عَلِيُّAli
لِلَّهِto God ذاthis الأَجَلُthe appointed end الوَحِيُّswift
Your loss is hard for me to bear, O Ali.
Ah, God—what a swift death!
تَكَدَّرَgrew clouded فيكَbecause of you صافيthe clarity of العَيشِlife لَمّاwhen
عَدِمتُكَI lost you أَيُّهاO الخِلُّclose friend الصَفِيُّtrue-hearted
Life's clarity was clouded by your loss when
I lost you, O true-hearted friend.
لَئِنeven if أَخلَيتُI have left empty مِنكَof you مَحَلَّthe place of أُنسيmy solace
فَماyet not أَناI فيكَfor you مِنof أَسَفٍgrief خَلِيُّfree
Though I have left my place of solace bereft of you,
Yet I am not free of grief for you.
فَبَعدَكَso after you لَيسَnot يُفرِحُنيgladdens me بَشيرٌa bearer of good news
وَبَعدَكَand after you لَيسَnot يُحزِنُنيgrieves me نَعِيُّa bearer of death's tidings
So after you, no bearer of good news can gladden me,
And after you, no bearer of death's tidings can grieve me.
وَلَوكانَand if it were الرَدىdeath بَشَراًa man سَوِيّاًwell-formed
لَهابَكَwould have feared you أَيُّهاO البَشَرُman السَوِيُّwell-formed
And had death been a well-formed man,
It would have feared you, O well-formed man.
عَصانيdefied me الصَبرُpatience بَعدَكَafter you وَهوَthough it was طَوعيobedient to me
وَطاوَعَand obeyed بَعدَكَafter you الدَمعُtears العَصِيُّrebellious
Patience defied me after you, though once it obeyed me;
And after you, rebellious tears obeyed me.
وَهَلand have أَبقَتleft لِيَfor me الأَيّامُthe days دَمعاًtears
فَيُسعِدنيso it may aid me بِهِwith it الجَفنُthe eyelid الشَقِيُّwretched
And have the days left me any tears
So that my wretched eyelid might help me mourn with them?
فَياso O جَزَعيmy anguish تَعَزَّtake comfort فَلَيسَfor there is no صَبرٌpatience
وَياand O ظَمَأيmy thirst تَسَلَّseek solace فَلَيسَfor there is no رِيُّquenching
So, O my anguish, take comfort, for there is no patience;
And, O my thirst, seek solace, for there is no quenching.
أَتَمضيdo you depart? أَنتَyou مُنفَرِداًalone وَأَبقىwhile I remain
لَقَدindeed غَدَرَتكَbetrayed you نَفسُكَyour own soul ياوَفِيُّO faithful one
Do you depart alone, while I remain?
Your own soul has indeed betrayed you, O faithful one.
فَهَلso is حَقٌّreal حَياتُكَyour life ياO زُهَيرٌZuhayr
وَهَلand is حَقٌّreal وَفَاتُكَyour death ياO عَلِيُّAli
So is your life real, O Zuhayr?
And is your death real, O Ali?
وَحَقّاًand truly صارَbecame ذاكَthat البَحرُthe sea يُبساًdry
وَصَوَّحَand withered ذَلِكَthat الرَوضُthe garden البَهِيُّsplendid
And truly, that sea has dried up,
And that splendid garden has withered,
وَأَقلَعَand ceased ذَلِكَthat الغَيثُthe rain المُرَجّىhoped-for
فَلاso no الوَسميُّfirst seasonal rain مِنهُfrom it وَلاnor الوَلِيُّfollowing rain
And that hoped-for rain has ceased,
So there is no first rain from it, nor any following rain.
لَقَدindeed طَوَتِfolded away الحَوادِثُcalamities مِنهُof him جِسماًa body
وَلَيسَbut there is no لِذِكرِهِfor his memory فيamong الناسِthe people طَيُّfolding away
Indeed, calamities have folded away his body,
But his memory among the people cannot be folded away.
مَضَواthey went بِسَريرِهِwith his bier وَعَلَيهِand upon it نورٌa light
جَلِيٌّplain to see تَحتَهُbeneath it سِرٌّa secret خَفِيُّhidden
They carried his bier away, and upon it was a light,
Plain to see, with a hidden secret beneath it.
وَفيand in أَكفانِهِhis shrouds نَدبٌa gallant man سَرِيٌّnoble
تَخَلَّفَremained بَعدَهُafter him ذِكرٌa memory سَنِيُّillustrious
And in his shrouds lay a gallant, noble man;
An illustrious memory remained after him,
عَلىat حينَa time when اِستَفاضَspread widely الذِكرُrenown عَنهُabout him
وَحينَand when أَتىhe came كَماas اِندَفَعَsurged الأَتِيُّthe torrent
At a time when word of him had spread far and wide,
And when he came forth like a rushing torrent.
وَكَمand how often دَرَّتflowed abundantly مَكارِمُهُhis generous deeds لِعافٍfor a supplicant
كَماas دَرَّتflowed with milk لِأَطفالٍfor children ثُدِيُّbreasts
And how often his generous deeds flowed for a supplicant,
As breasts flowed with milk for children.
وَكَمand how often أَروىquenched عَلىamid ظَمَإٍthirst نَداهُhis bounty
سَقاهُmay it water him هاطِلُthe downpour of الغَيثِrain الرَوِيُّcopious
And how often his bounty quenched thirst—
May a copious downpour of rain water him.
