لِحاظُكَyour glances أَمضىsharper مِنَthan المُرهَفِthe honed blade
وَريقُكَand your saliva أَحلىsweeter مِنَthan القَرقَفِwine
Your glances are sharper than a honed blade,
Your glance is sharper than a sword
And your saliva is sweeter than wine.
And your saliva sweeter than wine
وَمِنand against سَيفِthe sword لَحظِكَyour glance لاnot أَتَّقيI guard myself
وَمِنand of خَمرِthe wine ريقِكَyour saliva لاnot أَكتَفيI have enough
I do not guard against the sword of your glance,
I cannot evade your glance's blade
And I cannot get enough of the wine of your saliva.
Nor can I get enough of your wine
أُقاسيI endure المَنونَdeath لِنَيلِto attain المُنىdesires
وَيالَيتَand would that هَذاthis بِهَذاfor this يَفيwould suffice
I endure death to attain my desires,
I suffer separation to gain union
And would that this were enough to gain them!
Would that this leads to that as remedy
زَهاhas blossomed وَردُthe rose خَدَّيكَyour two cheeks لَكِنَّهُbut it
بِغَيرِby anything other than النَواظِرِeyes لَمnot يُقطَفِhas been plucked
The rose of your cheeks has blossomed, yet it
The rose of your cheek is fair indeed
Has never been plucked except by eyes.
But was plucked by eyes other than mine
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمواthey claimed أَنَّهُthat it مَضعَفٌdouble-flowered
وَماand not عَلِمواthey knew أَنَّهُthat it مُضعِفيwhat weakens me
And they have claimed that it is double-flowered,
And though they claimed it is double
Yet they did not know that it weakens me.
They knew not it makes me double over
مَلَكتَyou have taken possession فَهَلso is there لِيَfor me مِنany مُعتِقٍone who sets free
وَجُرتَand you acted unjustly فَهَلso is there لِيَfor me مِنany مُنصِفِone who grants justice
You have enslaved me—is there anyone to free me?
You conquered me, is there any emancipator?
And you have wronged me—is there anyone to do me justice?
You fled away, is there one who can make me see?
مَدَدتُI stretched out إِلَيكَto you يَديmy hand سائِلاًbegging
I seek protection for you فيin الحُبِّlove مِنfrom مَوقِفيmy plight
I stretched out my hand to you, begging;
I stretched my hands asking for mercy
I pray you be spared my plight in love.
I seek your protection from my stance in love
لَقَدindeed طابَhas become sweet لِيَto me فيكَfor you هَذاthis الغَراpassion (word continued)
مُcompletion of 'passion' وَإِنand even if صَحَّis certain ليto me أَنَّهُthat it مُتلِفيmy destroyer
Indeed, this passion for you has grown sweet to me,
How pleasant this love for me if true
Even if I know for certain that it will destroy me.
Even if verified that it will end one day
وَعَهدِيَand my pledge عَهديmy pledge لِذاكَto that الوَفاfidelity
سَواءٌall the same وَفَيتَyou keep faith وَإِنand if لَمnot تَفِyou keep faith
And my vow of fidelity remains unchanged,
My pledge is my pledge to that loyalty
Whether you keep faith or do not.
Be it you kept loyal or you did not
وَحَقِّby the sanctity of حَياتِكَyour life إِنّيindeed I اِمرُؤٌa man
بِغَيرِby anything other than حَياتِكَyour life لَمnot أَحلِفِI have sworn
By the sanctity of your life, I am a man
By your life, I am a man who has not sworn
Who has never sworn by anything but your life.
By other than your life, this I affirm
