تَأبىyou refuse وَإِلىand until مَتىwhen التَماديpersistence
قَدindeed آنَthe time has come بِأَنfor يُفيقَto awaken غافِلa heedless person
You refuse—and how long will you persist?
You refuse, but for how long will you persist?
The time has come for a heedless one to awaken.
It is time for the heedless one to awaken.
ماhow أَعظَمَgreat حَسرَتيmy regret لِعُمرٍfor a lifetime
قَدindeed ضاعَwas wasted وَلَمand did not أَفُزI gain بِطائِلanything of worth
How great is my regret for a lifetime
How great is my regret for a life
That was wasted, while I gained nothing of worth.
That has been lost without gain.
قَدindeed عَزَّhas become grievous عَلَيَّto me سوءُthe wretchedness حاليof my state
ماnot يَفعَلُdoes ماwhat فَعَلتُI have done عاقِلa sensible person
My wretched state has become hard for me to bear.
My dire state weighs heavily upon me.
No sensible person does what I have done.
A sensible person would not do what I have done.
ماnot أَعلَمُI know مايَكونُwhat will be مِنّيfrom me
وَالأَمرُand the matter كَماas عَلِمتَyou know هائِلterrifying
I do not know what will become of me.
I know not what will become of me,
And the matter, as you know, is terrifying.
As matters stand, it is formidable.
ياO رَبُّLord وَأَنتَand you ليto me رَحيمٌmerciful
I have come to you راجِياًhopeful وَآمِلand expectant
O Lord, you are merciful to me;
O Lord, You are merciful to me,
I have come to you, hopeful and expectant.
I have come to You hopeful and aspiring.
حاشاكَfar be it from you أَنto تَرُدَّyou turn away ضَعيفاًa weak person
قَدindeed أَصبَحَhas become فيin ذَراكَyour shelter نازِلlodging
Far be it from you to turn away a weak person
Far be it from You to turn away one made weak,
Who has come to dwell in your shelter.
Who has arrived seeking shelter in Your precincts.
ياO أَكرَمَmost generous مَنof those whom رَجاهُhas placed hope in him راجٍone who hopes
عَنfrom بابِكَyour door لاnot يُرَدُّis turned away سائِلa petitioner
O most generous of those in whom the hopeful have placed their hope,
O Most Generous One whom the hopeful turn to,
No petitioner is turned away from your door.
No beseecher is turned away from Your door.
