You have been away from me—what news?

This is not how we were known to be.

    I cannot bear coldness,

    no, nor separation.

Do not blame one who loves you,

who tried to be patient but could not.

My eye no longer knows slumber,

when you acquainted it with sleeplessness.

So perhaps a glance from you—

    a look may be enough.

The eye of one who beholds

you needs neither sun nor moon.

O you who turn away, from whom

    comes neither messenger nor news!

And from him came what came—

if only he would come and apologize.

    Every fault, in honor

    of your countenance, is forgiven.

I am at a gathering that delights

you in appearance and in experience:

between a singer and a young gazelle,

    a delight for hearing and sight;

    and companions in whose mention

    books and chronicles take pride.

    And whenever they converse,

then they are bright stars and blossoms.

So be gracious, for our day

is radiant with you, if you visit us.
