تَساوَيتُمُyou are all alike لاmay not أَكثَرَincrease the number اللَهُGod مِنكُمُof you
فَماfor there is no فيكُمُamong you وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَّهِto God مَحمودُanyone praiseworthy
You are all alike—may God not increase your numbers.
You are all equal, may Allah increase your number
For none of you, praise be to God, is praiseworthy.
Among you, praise be to Allah, are the praised
رَأَيتُكُمُI found you لاnot يَنجَحُsucceeds القَصدُthe aim عِندَكُمwith you
وَلاnor العِرفُkindness مَعروفٌknown وَلاnor الجودُgenerosity مَوجودُto be found
I found that no aim is achieved with you,
I saw you, no purpose succeeds with you
Nor is kindness known, nor generosity to be found.
Nor is proper conduct known, nor generosity found
وَدِدتُI wished بِأَنّيthat I ماnot رَأَيتُhad seen وُجوهَكُمyour faces
وَأَنَّand that طَريقاًa road جِئتُكُمI came to you مِنهُfrom it مَسدودُblocked
I wished I had never seen your faces,
I wish I had not seen your faces
And that the road by which I came to you had been blocked.
And that I came to you by a blocked road
مَتىwhen تُبعِدَنّيcarries me far away عَنfrom حُدودِthe borders بِلادِكُمyour land
مُطَهَّمَةٌwell-built steeds جُردٌsleek-coated وَمَهرِيَّةٌand Mahri she-camels قودُlong-necked
When will I be carried far from the borders of your land
When will you take me away from the outskirts of your lands
By well-built, sleek-coated steeds and long-necked Mahri she-camels,
Scorched, stripped bare, led by the halter?
وَأُصبِحُand I come to be لاnot يَجريpasses بِبالِيَthrough my mind ذِكرِكُمthought of you
وَتَقطَعُand sever ماwhat بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمُand between you البيدُthe deserts
And find myself with no thought of you crossing my mind,
And I will wake with no thought of you in my mind
And the deserts sever all ties between me and you?
And the distance will cut what lies between us
