إِلىto عَدلِكُمyour justice أُنهيI submit حَديثيmy words وَأَنتَهيand I stop
فَجودواso be generous بِإِقبالٍwith attention عَلَيَّto me وَإِصغاءِand listening
To your justice I submit my words, and there I stop.
To your justice I end my words and stop
Then grant me your attention and a listening ear.
So be kindly disposed to me and listen
عَتَبتُكُمُI reproached you عَتبَthe reproach of المُحِبِّthe lover حَبيبَهُhis beloved
وَقُلتُand I spoke بِإِذلالٍin abasement فَقولواso speak بِإِصفاءِwith sincere affection
I reproached you as a lover reproaches his beloved.
I reproached you with the reproach of a lover to his beloved
And I spoke in abasement; answer with sincere affection.
And I spoke with humility, so speak genuinely
لَعَلَّكُمُperhaps you قَدindeed صَدَّكُمhas deterred you عَنfrom زِيارَتيvisiting me
مَخافَةُfear of أَمواهٍwaters لِدَمعيof my tears وَأَنواءِand storms
Perhaps you have been kept from visiting me
Perhaps you were kept from visiting me
By fear of the waters of my tears and their storms.
Fearing the tears and sighs from my eyes
فَلَوfor if صَدَقَwere true الحُبُّlove الَّذيthat تَدَّعونَهُyou claim it
وَأَخلَصتُمُand you were sincere فيهِin it مَشَيتُمyou would walk عَلىon الماءِwater
For if the love you claim were true,
If the love you claim were true
And you were sincere in it, you would walk on water.
And you were sincere in it, you would walk on water
وَإِنand if تَكُit be أَنفاسيmy breaths خَشيتُمyou feared لَهيبَهاtheir blaze
وَهالَتكُمُand appalled you نَيرانُfires وَجدٍpassion بِأَحشائيin my entrails
And if you feared the blaze of my breaths,
And if you feared the flames of my breath
And the fires of passion in my entrails appalled you,
And the fires of passion within me alarmed you
فَكونواthen be رِفاعِيِّينَRifaʿi devotees فيin الحُبِّlove مَرَّةًonce
وَخوضواand wade through لَظىthe blaze of نارٍa fire لِشَوقِيَof my longing حَرّاءِscorching
Then be Rifaʿis in love, for once,
Then be like al-Rifa’i in love once
And wade through the blaze of my longing’s scorching fire.
And plunge into the flames of my burning passion

May I be denied your favor if I am content with anyone but you,
I am forbidden your approval if I am content without you
Or exchange you for a houri in Paradise.
Or I am distracted from you in the gardens by a houri
