    وَسِوايَ في العُشّاقِ غادِر

    Others are able to forget;

    and others among lovers are faithless.

    In love, I harbor a secret,

    and God knows secrets best.

    And one likened to a bough—my

    heart is forever fluttering over him.

    Sweet of speech—and indeed it

    is a sweetness that has split gallbladders.

    فَأَعجَب لِشاكٍ مِنهُ شاكِر

    I complain of his conduct and give thanks for it;

    so marvel at one who complains of him yet gives thanks.

    Do not question the fluttering of my

    heart, while the beloved is here with me.

    ضُرِبَت لَهُ فيها البَشائِر

    The heart is nothing but his dwelling;

    drums of welcome have been beaten there for him.

    O you who, through love of him, have left me

    a proverb among those widely repeated:

    My tale is never

    superseded—only copied into books.

    O night, you have no end

    to be hoped for, nor has longing any end.

    O night, grow long; O longing, endure:

    I am patient in both states.

    In you I earn a holy warrior's reward,

    if it is true that night is an unbeliever.

    My eye and the star's eye, in

    you, are both distracted and wakeful.

    يا لَيتَ بَدري كانَ حاضِر

    May your full moon's presence bring you joy;

    oh, would that my full moon were here,

    so that it might be clear to my eye

    which of the two is splendid and radiant.

    My full moon is more delicate in beauty,

    and the difference is as plain as dawn.
