    O Zayd, how have you forgotten your Amr

    and prolonged your estrangement after union?

    Be gentle, for you have left me no

    strength to endure your treachery.

    This has indeed pleased me—

    the wasting sickness I suffer—if it has pleased you.

    كَ وَقَد عَلِمتَ بِهِ فَأَمرَك

    If this is with your consent,

    and you know of it, then yours is the command;

    or if your purpose in love is

    to kill me—may God prolong your life!

    My lord, how sweet you are in

    the lover’s heart, and how bitter you are!

    لِ فَلَستُ أَجهَلُ فيهِ قَدرَك

    Be as proud as you please of your beauty;

    for I am not unaware of your worth in it.
