ماhow أَلطَفَcharming هَذِهِthese الشَمائِلgraces
O you whom wine has toyed with,
O you who is toyed with by perfection
how charming these graces are!
How gentle are these traits
نَشوانُtipsy يَهُزُّهُsways him دَلالٌcoquetry
كَالغُصنِlike the branch مَعَwith النَسيمِthe breeze مائِلbending
Tipsy, swayed by coyness,
Flirtation sways him while coquetry allures
like a branch bending with the breeze.
Like a branch leaning with the breeze
لاnot يُمكِنُهُis possible for him الكَلامُspeech لَكِنbut
قَدalready حَمَّلَloaded طَرفَهُhis gaze رَسائِلmessages
He cannot speak, and yet
Speech fails him, but
he has laden his gaze with messages.
His glance conveys messages
ماhow أَطيَبَsweet وَقتَناour time وَأَهنىand blissful
وَالعاذِلُand the reproacher غائِبٌabsent وَغافِلand unaware
How sweet our time is, and how blissful,
How pleasant and serene is our time
with the reproacher absent and unaware.
While the blamer is absent and oblivious
عِشقٌpassionate love وَمَسَرَّةٌand joy وَسُكرٌand intoxication
وَالعَقلُand the mind بِبَعضِby part of ذاكَthat ذاهِلdazed
Passionate love, joy, and intoxication—
Passion, joy, and intoxication
and the mind is dazed by even part of that.
And reason somewhat heedless of it all
وَالبَدرُand the full moon يَلوحُgleams فيin قِناعٍa veil
وَالغُصنُand the branch يَميلُsways فيin غَلائِلsheer robes
And the full moon gleams beneath a veil,
The moon shines behind a veil
and the branch sways in sheer robes.
And the branch sways in tresses
وَالوَردُand the roses عَلىon الخُدودِthe cheeks غَضٌّfresh
وَالنَرجِسُand the narcissus فيin العُيونِthe eyes ذابِلdrooping
And the roses on the cheeks are fresh,
The roses on the cheeks are fresh
and the narcissus in the eyes droops.
And the narcissus in the eyes is languid
وَالعَيشُand life كَماas نُحِبُّwe like صافٍuntroubled

And life is untroubled, just as we like it,
Life is as we wish, pure
and delight in what we love is complete.
And company with whom we love, perfect

My master, it is right for me that I
fight for one such as you in love.

I bear a love for you, as you know,
For you I have a love, as you know
whose secret the reproachers do not understand.
Its secret perplexes the blamers

In my love for you, I have offered my soul,
For your love I have given my soul
if you will accept what I have offered.
If you accept what I have given

I have a request of you, so tell me:
If you have a need from me, tell me
will you grant it when I ask?
Will you, if I ask, grant?

ماتَكذِبُdo not lie هَذِهِthese المَخائِلsigns
There is a sign of favor in your face;
On your face, pleasure is evident
these signs do not lie.
Your glances do not lie
لاnot أَطلُبُI seek فيin الهَوىlove شَفيعاًan intercessor
ليI have فيكَin you غِنىًsufficiency عَنِfrom الوَسائِلintermediaries
I seek no intercessor in love;
I do not seek an intercessor in love
in you I have no need of intermediaries.
I have independence from means in your love

This year has passed; would that I knew
This year has passed, would that I know
whether the next will restore your favor to me.
Will it bring back your acceptance

Behold your servant, standing humbled
At the door, a beggar extending his palm
at the door, holding out a beggar's hand.

He is content with just a little closeness to you;
The downpour from the beloved is plentiful.
a drizzle from the beloved is a downpour.
