O you so given to shunning and turning away,

I am content with whatever pleases you.

Come, for God's sake, my beloved, tell me:

Where is that contentment, and where is that forbearance?

And whom among humankind would you take in place of one

who, by God, would take no one in your place?

My fame and my tale concerning you have spread,

widely told, from an overflowing fount of tears.

And a heart has become bereft of patience,

    and eyelids now remain unclosed.

Indeed, I have a request of you, and I

am bashful and reluctant to mention it.

A request—ever since I desired it, I have been hinting

at it, while you keep turning away.

    ذاكَ مُستَقبَلٌ وَهَذاكَ ماضي

    My hope in you is barred by the sword of a glance;

that hope lies in the future; that sword is keen-edged.

I long to win a promise from you,

and let my life pass in seeking its fulfillment.

This is my story, and this is my account.

And the decision is yours, so decree what you will.
