أَأَحبابَناO our loved ones حاشاكُمُmay you be spared مِنfrom عِيادَةٍa sickbed visit
فَذَلِكَfor that أَمرٌa matter فيin القُلوبِhearts مَضيضُpainful
O our loved ones, may you be spared the need for a sickbed visit;
My loved ones, far be it from you to visit
for that is a matter painful to hearts.
That would be a matter discomforting in hearts
وَماعاقَنيand did not hinder me عَنكُمfrom you سِوىexcept السَبتِSaturday عائِقٌany hindrance
فَفيfor on السَبتِSaturday قالواthey said ماnot يُعادُis visited مَريضُa sick person
And no hindrance kept me from you except Saturday;
Nothing prevented me from you except Saturday an obstacle
for, they said, on Saturday no sick person is visited.
For they said on Saturday no sick person should be visited
وَلاand do not تُنكِرواdisapprove of مِنّيon my part أُموراًthings تَغَيَّرَتhave changed
فَقَدfor indeed خُضتُI have waded فيماinto what الناسُpeople فيهِinto it تَخوضُwade
And do not disapprove of things about me that have changed;
Do not blame me for matters that have changed
for I have waded into what people wade into.
I have delved into what people delve into
وَعاشَرتُand I kept company with أَقواماًpeople تَعَوَّضتُI found replacements عَنهُمُin their stead
أُوَطِّئُI soften أَخلاقيmy character لَهُمfor them وَأَروضُand I tame
And I have kept company with people for whom I found replacements;
And associated with people I got used to in their place
I soften my character for them and tame it.
I tame my morals for them and train
وَلِلناسِand people have عاداتٌcustoms وَقَدand indeed أَلِفواthey have grown accustomed بِهاto them
لَهاthey have سُنَنٌrules يَرعَونَهاthey observe them وَفُروضُand obligations
And people have customs, and have grown accustomed to them;
People have customs which they are accustomed to
these have rules people observe, and obligations.
They have norms they observe and duties
فَمَنso whoever لَمdoes not يُعاشِرهِمassociate with them عَلىaccording to العُرفِcustom بَينَهُمamong them
فَذاكَthen that person ثَقيلٌtiresome بَينَهُمamong them وَبَغيضُand detested
So whoever does not associate with them according to the custom among them,
Whoever does not socialize with them by the custom between them
then that person is tiresome among them, and detested.
He is burdensome among them and odious
