يامَنO one who يُكَلِّمُناspeaks to us حَتّىuntil نُكَلِّمَهُwe speak to him
كَمhow often يُعرِضُturn away الناسُpeople عَنهُfrom him وَهُوَwhile he يَعتَرِضُintrudes
O one who speaks to us until we speak to him,
O you who speaks to us so we may speak to him
How often people turn away from him, while he intrudes!
How people turn away from him as he engages
لَقَدindeed بَسَطتُكَI put you at ease حَتّىuntil رُحتُI became مُنبَسِطاًunreserved
إِنَّindeed الكَريمَthe noble person عَنِfrom الفَحشاءِobscenity يَنقَبِضُrecoils
I have indeed put you at ease, until I myself grew unreserved.
I have been lenient with you until I became lenient
Indeed, the noble person recoils from obscenity.
Indeed the generous recoils from vulgarity
لِمَنto whom أُخاطِبُI speak لاخَلقٌno good looks وَلاand no خُلُقٌcharacter
وَمَنand whom أُعاتِبُI reproach لاعِرضٌno honor وَلاand no عَرَضُworldly possessions
Whom am I addressing? Someone with neither looks nor character.
To whom do I speak when there is no manners or ethics
And whom am I reproaching? Someone with neither honor nor possessions.
And whom do I reproach when there is no honor or dignity
