My beloved, what is this coldness that I see?

And where are the forbearance and tenderness between us?

Something about you today, I have no doubt, makes me uneasy.

For your face is not the face I used to know.

Indeed, the slanderers have reported falsehoods about me.

And I was swayed by what they said, so they added more and went too far.

It is as though you have believed their talk about me.

And far be this from you—your character is nobler.

And people spoke about people before our time.

So Jacob was called senile, and Joseph was accused of theft.

By your life, tell me what you have heard.

For you know what you say and are fair.

For if it is a statement I truly did make,

Then a statement admits interpretation and can be taken another way.

And suppose it is a word sent down from God:

For some people have indeed altered the Torah and distorted it.

And here we are—I, the slanderer, and you, all of us:

A mighty day and a standing for judgment await us.
