Messenger of favor, a warm and hearty welcome!

Your message—how sweet and pleasant it is to me!

And O bearer of greetings from the one I love,

May God's peace be upon you as long as the east wind blows.

And O kind one who has come from a kind one,

And O sweet one who has given sweet words as a gift,

The news of favor I have heard has truly delighted me,

And that message has stirred me and filled me with rapture.

    أَلا إِنَّهُ يَومٌ يَكونُ لَهُ نَبا

    And you brought glad tidings of the day on which we shall meet;

Ah, it is a day that will be much spoken of.

So speak in hints when you pass the bān trees and the protected pasture,

And beware lest you forget and mention Zaynab.

A hint about that named one will suffice you,

And leave him protected, veiled in beauty.

Give me a hint through a single one of his qualities,

You will be like one who gave his name, his kunya, and his epithet.

And give me more of that message; perhaps I

May believe something I had been denying.

From what has passed in our reproaches, I shall write

A gilded book for lovers, with my tears.

I marveled at a phantom that visited my bed by night,

And went back without healing my tormented heart.

So he made me suspect something, and I said: perhaps he

Saw a state he did not like, and so kept away.

Yet he did not turn away from anything suspect; rather,

He saw me slain in the darkness of night, and so grew afraid.
