عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنكُمyou أَينَwhere ذاكَthat التَوَدُّدُaffection
وَأَينَand where جَميلٌkindness مِنكُمُfrom you كُنتُI used to أَعهَدُknow
May God pardon you—where is that affection?
And where is the kindness I once knew from you?
بِماby what بَينَناbetween us لاتَنقُضواdo not break العَهدَthe pledge بَينَناbetween us
فَيَسمَعَlest ... hear واشٍa tale-bearer أَوor يَقولَspeak مُفَنِّدُa faultfinder
By what binds us, do not break the pledge between us,
lest a tale-bearer hear, or a faultfinder speak.
وَياand O أَيُّهاyou الأَحبابُdear ones ماذاwhat أَرىI see بِكُمin you
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod أَهدىbetter guided وَأَرشَدُand wiser
And O dear ones, what do I see in you?
And I, praise be to God, am better guided and wiser.
تَعالَواcome نُخَلِّlet us set aside العَتبَreproach عَنّاfrom us وَنَصطَلِحand make peace
وَعودواand return بِناwith us لِلوَصلِto union وَالعَودُand returning أَحمَدُmore praiseworthy
Come, let us put reproach behind us and make peace.
And bring us back to union; returning is more praiseworthy.
وَلاand do not تُخدِشواscratch بِالعَتبِwith reproach وَجهَthe face of مَحَبَّةٍlove
لَهُit has بَهجَةٌsplendor أَنوارُهاits lights تَتَوَقَّدُblaze
And do not scratch with reproach the face of love,
whose splendor has lights that blaze.
وَلاand not نَتَحَمَّلwe shoulder مِنَّةَindebtedness to الرُسلِthe messengers بَينَناbetween us
وَلاnor غُرَرَfine phrases الكُتبِthe letters الَّتيthat تَتَرَدَّدُpass back and forth
And let us not be beholden to the messengers between us,
nor burdened by the fine phrases of letters passing to and fro.
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) تَعاتَبناwe reproach one another وَعُدناand we return إِلىto الرِضىharmony
فَذَلِكَthen that وُدٌّaffection بَينَناbetween us يَتَجَدَّدُis renewed
Whenever we exchange reproaches and return to harmony,
then that is the affection between us being renewed.
عَتَبتُمyou reproached عَلَيناagainst us وَاِعتَذَرناand we apologized إِلَيكُمُto you
وَقُلتُمand you spoke وَقُلناand we spoke وَالهَوىand love يَتَأَكَّدُis strengthened
You reproached us, and we apologized to you.
And you spoke and we spoke, while love grew stronger.
عَتَبتُمyou reproached فَلَمso ... not نَعلَمwe know لِطيبِbecause of the sweetness of حَديثِكُمyour words
أَذَلِكَis that? عَتبٌreproach أَمor رِضاًcontentment وَتَوَدُّدُand affection
You reproached us, yet your words were so sweet we could not tell:
Was that reproach, or contentment and affection?
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas ذاكَthat العَتبُreproach عَنfrom فَرطِan excess of غَيرَةٍjealousy
وَياand O طيبَsweetness of عَتبٍreproach بِالمَحَبَّةِto love يَشهَدُbears witness
And indeed, that reproach sprang from excessive jealousy,
and how sweet is reproach that bears witness to love!
وَبِتناand we spent the night كَماas نَهوىwe desire حَبيبَينِtwo lovers بَينَناbetween us
عِتابٌreproach كَماas اِنحَلَّcame unstrung الجُمانُthe pearls المُنَضَّدُstrung in order
And we spent the night as we wished, two lovers; between us were
reproaches, like strung pearls coming loose.
وَأَضحىand began نَسيمُthe breeze of الرَوضِthe garden يَرويrecounts حَديثِناour conversation
فَياso O رَبُّLord لاnot تُسمَعbe heard وُشاةٌtale-bearers وَحُسَّدُand enviers
And the garden breeze began recounting our conversation;
so, O Lord, let no tale-bearers or enviers be heard.
