لَوif only تَرانيyou see me وَحَبيبيand my beloved عِندَماwhen
فَرَّhe fled مِثلَlike الظَبيِthe gazelle مِنfrom بَينِbetween يَدَيَّmy hands
If only you could see me and my beloved when
If you could see me and my love when
He fled like a gazelle from between my hands,
He bolted like a gazelle before me
وَمَضىand he went on يَعدوrunning وَأَعدوand I run خَلفَهُbehind him
وَتَراناand you see us قَدalready طَوَيناwe folded up الأَرضَthe earth طَيَّa thorough folding
And he ran on while I ran after him,
And raced ahead as I gave chase behind
And you would see how we had folded up the earth.
You'd see we'd spanned the land completely
قالَhe said ماwill you not تَرجَعُturn away عَنّيfrom me قُلتُI said لاno
قالَhe said ماwhat تَطلُبُyou seek مِنّيfrom me قُلتُI said شَيَّsomething
He said, “Won’t you leave me?” I said, “No.”
He said, will you not turn from me? I said, no way
He said, “What do you want from me?” I said, “Something.”
He said, what is it you want of me? I said, anything
فَاِنثَنىthen he turned يَحمَرُّblushing مِنّيbecause of me خَجَلاًin embarrassment
وَثَناهُand turned him التيهُpride عَنّيaway from me لاnot إِلَيَّtoward me
Then he turned, blushing with embarrassment because of me,
Then he shied away, blushing from me in shame
And pride turned him away from me, not toward me.
And distraction took him from me, not to me
كِدتُI almost بَينَamong الناسِthe people أَنto أَلثِمَهُkiss him
لَوif only أَفعَلُI do it ماكانَwhat would there be عَليَّagainst me
I almost kissed him among the people.
I almost kissed him openly among the people
Ah, if I were to do it, what blame would fall on me?
Oh, if only I'd done what was incumbent upon me
