لَئِنif indeed صَدَّقَتنيhave proved true for me فيabout الحَديثِthe account ظُنونيmy suspicions
لَقَدindeed نَقَلَتhave conveyed سِرّيmy secret وُشاةُthe talebearers of جُفونيmy eyelids
If my suspicions have proved true about what was said,
If you believe me in my talk, my conjectures
the telltales of my eyelids have indeed divulged my secret.
My secrets have certainly been conveyed by the talebearers of my eyelids
وَبِالرَغمِand despite مِنّيmyself أَنَّthat سِرّاًa secret أَصونُهُI guard it
يَصيرُbecomes بِدَمعيthrough my tears وَهوَand it is غَيرُnot مَصونِkept safe
And against my will, a secret I guard
And despite my keeping a secret guarded
is left unguarded through my tears.
It comes out through my tears, no longer concealed
وَقَدand indeed رابَنيhas troubled me ياO أَهلَpeople of وُدِّيَmy affection أَنَّكُمthat you
مَطَلتُمyou delayed repaying وَأَنتُمwhile you قادِرونَare able دُيونيdebts owed to me
And it has troubled me, O my loved ones, that you
And I'm grieved, O people of my love, that you
have delayed paying my dues, though you are able.
Delayed though able to settle my debts
بِروحِيَwith my soul as ransom أَنتُمyou مَنwho رَسوليmy messenger إِلَيكُمُto you
وَمَنand who مُسعِديmy comforter فيin حُبِّكُمlove for you وَمُعينيand my helper
My soul be your ransom! Who is my messenger to you,
By my soul, you are my messenger to them
and who will comfort me in my love for you and help me?
And my one who brings me happiness in your love and aids me
سَلواask دَمعَthe tears of عَينيmy eye عَنabout أَحاديثِthe tales of لَوعَتيmy anguish
لِتُعرِبَso they may tell عَنof تِلكَthose الشُؤونِaffairs شُؤونيmy tear ducts
Ask the tears of my eye about the tales of my anguish,
Ask the tears of my eyes about the sorrows of my anguish
so my tear ducts may speak of those affairs.
That they may express those concerns, my concerns
فَلِلدَمعِfor the tears have مِنfrom عَينيmy eye مَعينٌa spring يَمُدُّهُfeeds it
فَإِنso if تَسأَلوهُyou ask it تَسأَلواyou ask اِبنَIbn (son of) مَعينِMa'in (a spring)
For the tears from my eye have a spring that feeds them;
For the tears from my eyes have an informant that provides for them
so if you question them, you question Ibn Ma'in.
So if you ask them, you ask the son of an informant
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that دَمعيmy tears لاnot يَزالُceases يَخونُنيbetrays me
وَمَنand who ذاthat one الَّذيwho يَرويrelates حَديثَthe account of خَؤونِa habitual traitor
Yet my tears never cease betraying me—
Even though my tears still betray me
and who would repeat the tale of a habitual traitor?
And who is he who can narrate the tale of sadness
فَلاso do not تَقبَلواaccept لِلدَمعِfrom the tears عَنّيabout me رِوايَةًan account
فَلَيسَfor it is not عَلىwith سِرِّthe secret of الهَوىlove بِأَمينِtrustworthy
So accept no account of me from my tears,
So do not accept from my tears any narration
for they cannot be trusted with love's secret.
For they are not trusted with the secret of passion
حَلَفتُI swore لَكُمto you أَنthat لاnot أَخونَI betray عُهودَكُمyour covenants
وَأَعطَيتُكُمand I gave you عِندَat اليَمينِthe oath يَمينيmy right hand
I swore to you not to break my pledges to you,
I swore to you I won't betray your covenants
and gave you my right hand when I took the oath.
And I gave you, at the oath, my oath
وَهاand here أَناI كَالمَجنونِlike a madman فيكُمfor you صَبابَةًin ardent longing
وَحاشاكُمُand far be it from you تَرضَونَyou would be content ليfor me بِجُنونيwith my madness
And here I am, like a madman, yearning for you;
Yet here I am, raving mad among you
and far be it from you to be content with my madness.
And far be it from you to approve my madness
وَهَبتُكُمُI gave you فيin الحُبِّlove عَقلِيَmy reason راضِياًwillingly
وَياand O لَيتَكُمif only you أَبقَيتُمُhad left لِيَfor me دينيmy faith
I willingly gave you my reason in love,
I gifted you my reason in love willingly
and would that you had left me my faith!
Oh, would that you had left my faith for me
أَرىI see سُقمَthe sickness of جِسميmy body قَدindeed حَوَتهُhave contained it جُفونُكُمyour eyelids
فَلاso do not تَأخُذواtake ياO ظالِمينَcruel ones جُفونيmy eyelids
I see my body's sickness gathered in your eyelids;
I see my body's illness encompassed by your eyelids
so do not take my eyelids, O cruel ones.
So do not, O oppressors, take away my eyelids
أَأَحبابَناO our beloved ones إِنّيindeed I ضَنينٌjealously protective بِوُدِّكُمof your love
وَماand not كُنتُI was يَوماًon any day قَبلَهُbefore it بِضَنينِmiserly
O our beloved ones, I jealously guard your love,
O beloved ones, I am stingy for your love
though I had never been miserly before.
And I was never stingy before it
فَمَنso who ذاthat one الَّذيwho أَعتاضُI take in exchange عَنكُمin your place مِنَamong الوَرىhumankind
يَكونُwould be حَبيبيmy beloved مِثلَكُمlike you وَخَدينيand my intimate friend
So who among humankind could I take in your place,
So who in creation can I find as a substitute for you
to be, like you, my beloved and intimate friend?
To be my beloved like you and my companion?
وَمَنand who ذاthat one الَّذيwho أَرضىI am content بِهِwith him لِمَحَبَّتيfor my love
فَتَحسُنَso may be fitting فيهِfor him لَوعَتيmy anguish وَحَنينيand my longing
And whom could I accept as the object of my love,
And who can I accept for my love?
so that my anguish and longing for him would be fitting?
So that my anguish and yearning improve through him
أُحِبُّI love مِنَamong الأَشياءِthings ماكانَwhatever is فائِقاًoutstanding
وَماand none الدونُthe base person إِلّاbut مَنwhoever يَميلُinclines لَدونِtoward baseness
Of all things, I love whatever is outstanding;
Of things, I love what is supreme
and none is base but one who inclines to what is base.
And what is inferior is just inclined to inferiority
وَأَهجُرُand I shun شُربَdrinking الماءِwater غَيرَnot مُصَفِّقٍpurified
زُلالٍclear and sweet وَأَكلَand eating اللَحمِmeat غَيرَnot سَمينِfat
And I refrain from drinking water unless it is purified
And I shun drinking undistilled water
and limpid, and from eating meat unless it is fat.
Not limpid, and eating meat not fat
وَإِنand if قيلَit is said ليto me هَذاthis رَخيصٌcheap تَرَكتُهُI leave it
وَلاand not أَرتَضيI am satisfied إِلّاexcept بِكُلِّwith every ثَمينِprecious thing
And if I am told, 'This is cheap,' I leave it;
And if I'm told "This is cheap, leave it"
and I accept nothing but what is precious.
I won't accept but what is precious
فَإِنّيfor I رَأَيتُhave found الشَيءَa thing إِنif يَغلُis high قيمَةًin price
يَكُنit is بِمَكانٍin a position فيin القُلوبِhearts مَكينِsecure
For I have found that when a thing is high in price,
For I see that if a thing becomes expensive
it holds a secure place in hearts.
It has a place in the hearts, settled
حَبيبِيَmy beloved زِدنيgive me more مِنof حَديثٍa tale ذَكَرتُهُI mentioned it
لِيَسكُنَso it may rest هَذاthis القَلبُheart بَعضَsome سُكونِrest
My beloved, tell me more of the tale I mentioned,
My love, give me more of the talk I mentioned
so this heart may find some rest.
That this heart may settle, some settlement
وَقُلand say ليto me وَلاand do not تَحلِفswear فَإِنَّكَfor you صادِقٌtruthful
وَقَولُكَand your word عِنديto me مِثلُlike أَلفِa thousand يَمينِoaths
And tell me—do not swear, for you are truthful,
And tell me - swear not, for you are truthful
and to me your word is worth a thousand oaths.
And your word to me is like a thousand oaths
فَوَاللَهِfor, by God لَمdid not أَرتَبI doubt بِماabout what قَدalready ذَكَرتَهُyou mentioned it
وَلَمand did not تَختَلِجwaver بِالشَكِّwith doubt فيكَabout you ظُنونيmy thoughts
For by God, I have not doubted what you mentioned,
By Allah, I did not doubt what you have mentioned
nor have my thoughts of you wavered with doubt.
Nor did suspicions about you churn in my thoughts
وَإِنَّand indeed حَديثاًa tale أَنتَyou راويهِits narrator إِنَّنيindeed I
عَلىin ثِقَةٍconfidence مِنهُof it وَحُسنِand soundness of يَقينِcertainty
And any tale you tell—I
A narration you are relating, I indeed
am confident of it, with sound certainty.
Have confidence in it and excellent certainty
كَذَلِكَthus تَلقانيyou will find me إِذاwhen ماever اِختَبَرتَنيyou test me
يَسُرُّgladdens حِفاظيmy fidelity صاحِبيmy friend وَقَرينيand my companion
Thus you will find me whenever you test me:
Likewise you'll find me if you test me
my fidelity gladdens my friend and companion.
My reticence makes my companion happy
إِذاwhen قُلتُI said قَولاًa saying كُنتُI was لِلقَولِof the saying فاعِلاًa doer
وَكانَand was حَيائيmy sense of shame كافِليmy surety وَضَمينيand my guarantor
Whenever I said a thing, I put it into action,
When I say something I'll do the saying
and my sense of shame was my surety and guarantor.
And my modesty guarantees and vouches for me
تُبَشِّرُheralds عَنّيon my behalf بِالوَفاءِfidelity بَشاشَتيmy cheerful countenance
وَيَنطِقُand speaks نورُthe light of الصِدقِtruthfulness فَوقَupon جَبينيmy brow
My cheerful countenance heralds my fidelity,
My cheerfulness gives you glad tidings of my loyalty
and the light of truth speaks upon my brow.
And the light of truth shines on my forehead
