مُقيمٌsteadfast عَلىto العَهدِthe pledge مِنfrom صَبوَتيmy youthful passion
أَبيتُI spend the night وَأُصبِحُand I greet the morning فيin نَشوَتيmy rapture
I remain true to the pledge of my youthful passion;
Steadfast in the covenant of my youth
I pass the night and greet the morning in my rapture.
I spend the night and dawn in delight
يَرومُseek العَواذِلُthe reproachers ليfor me سَلوَةًrelease from love
وَأَينَand where العَواذِلُthe reproachers مِنfrom سَلوَتيmy forgetting love
The reproachers seek to make me forget my love;
The maidens desire consolation from me
But how far the reproachers are from making me forget!
But what is their consolation to my delight
وَليand I have لَيلَةٌa night طَرَقَتarrived by night بِالسُعودِwith good fortune
فَحَدِّثso tell بِماof whatever شِئتَyou wish عَنabout لَيلَتيmy night
And mine was a night that came bearing good fortune;
I have a night that was blessed with fortune
So tell whatever you wish about my night.
So speak what you wish of my night
فَماfor nothing كانَwas أَحسَنَlovelier مِنthan مَجلِسيmy gathering
وَماand nothing كانَwas أَرفَعَloftier مِنthan هِمَّتيmy ambition
For nothing was lovelier than my gathering,
Nothing was better than my gathering
And nothing was loftier than my ambition,
Nothing was nobler than my ambition
بِشَمسِwith the sun الضُحىmidmorning وَبِبَدرِand with the full moon الدُجىnight's darkness
عَلىon يَمنَتيmy right وَعَلىand on يَسرَتيmy left
With the sun of morning and the full moon of night
By the sun of the morning and the full moon of nightfall
On my right and on my left.
At my right hand and my left
وَبِتُّand I spent the night عَنabout خَبَريmy state لاتَسَلdo not ask
بِذاكَwith that one (masculine) الَّذيwho/which (masculine) وَبِتِلكَand with that one (feminine) الَّتيwho/which (feminine)
And I spent the night—do not ask how I fared—
I stay overnight without any news
With that one and with that other.
Of that one or of that another
فَقَضَّيتُهاso I spent it فيin الهَوىlove لَيلَةًa night
إِخالُI imagine الخَليفَةَthe caliph فيin خِدمَتيmy service
So I spent that night in love,
I spent it in passion a night
Imagining the caliph at my service.
Having the caliph in my service
سَأَشكُرُهاI shall thank it أَبَداًforever مابَقيتُas long as I live
وَإِنand even if عَظُمَتgrew great بَعدَهاafter it حَسرَتيmy sorrow
I shall thank it forever, as long as I live,
I will thank it forever as long as I live
Even if my sorrow afterward grows great.
Even if afterwards my yearning intensifies
فَماfor how كانَwas أَسهَلَeasy إِذwhen أَقبَلَتit came
وَماand how كانَwas أَصعَبَhard إِذwhen وَلَّتِit departed
For how easy it was when it came,
Nothing was easier when it drew near
And how hard it was when it departed!
Nothing was harder when it turned away
