وَذي خِسَّةٍ وافَيتُهُ عِندَ حاجَةٍ

سَمِعتُ بِهِ لَفظاً وَلَم أَرَهُ مَعنى

I met him in time of need, possessed of meanness,

Of whom I had heard the name, but not the meaning.

فَوَجهٌ وَلا بِشرٌ وَمالٌ وَلا نَدىً

لَقَد خابَ لا حُسناً حَواهُ وَلا حُسنى

A face without beauty, wealth without generosity,

Truly he missed both beauty that he claimed and bounty.
