I heard of a conversation—if only I had been present,

So my eye might rejoice as my ear rejoiced,

At the gracious praise I recounted,

And at the favor shown me without boastful reminders.

So, O you who alone delight in companionship,

Your beloved yearns for you and grieves.

So rise, let us make peace; let no one come between us,

And let no word from you or me reach the talebearers.

Both of us are at fault, mistaken in our unjust accusations.

For turning away is not right for you, nor for me.

So how did this estrangement I see come about,

When I never once believed or expected it?
