مالي عَلى الغَبنِ قُدرَه

وَأَنتَ قَد زِدتَ غِرَّه

I have no control over fate,

While you only increase caprice.

تَمشي فَتُظهِرُ عُجباً

إِذا مَشَيتَ وَخَطرَه

You walk exhibiting wonder,

When you walk with conceit.

وَلَستَ صاحِبَ قَدرٍ

وَلَستَ صاحِبَ قُدرَه

You are not a man of status,

Nor are you a man of worth.

وَلا أَرى غَيرَ تيهٍ

عَلى الأَنامِ وَنَفرَه

I see nothing but confusion,

Amongst people and estrangement.

وَفيكَ وَقتاً وَوَقتاً

بَعضُ المَلالِ وَفَترَه

In you there is a time, and a time,

Of some ennui and languor.

وَقالَ قَومٌ وَما لي

بِما يَقولونَ خِبرَه

And a people has said, but I have no knowledge,

Of what they say or information.

فَأَسأَلُ اللَهَ أَن لا

أَموتَ مِنكَ بِحَسرَه

So I ask God that I not,

Die from you in regret.

وَلا وَقى لَكَ نَفساً

وَلا أَقالَكَ عَثرَه

Nor have I protected a self for you,

Or relieved you of stumbling.
