وَعَدَpromised الزِيارَةَthe visit طَرفُهُhis gaze المُتَمَلِّقُflattering
وَتَلافُand the ruin قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom جُفونٍeyelids تَنطِقُspeak
His flattering gaze promised a visit,
The flattering one promised a visit,
and my heart's ruin comes from eyelids that speak.
And my heart was in anguish due to speaking eyelids,
إِنّيindeed I لَأَهوىI truly love الحُسنَbeauty حَيثُwherever وَجَدتُهُI found it
وَأَهيمُand I am entranced بِالقَدِّby the figure الرَشيقِgraceful وَأَعشَقُand I adore
Truly, I love beauty wherever I find it,
Indeed I love beauty wherever I find it,
and I am entranced by the graceful figure and adore it.
And I rave about the slender, tall one and fall in love,
وَبَلِيَّتيand my affliction كَفَلٌa rump عَلَيهِupon it ذُؤابَةٌa tress
مِثلُlike الكَثيبِthe sand dune عَلَيهِupon it صِلٌّa viper مُطرِقُhead-bowed
And my affliction is a rump with a tress upon it,
And my camel saddle has on it a docile she-camel,
like a sand dune with a head-bowed viper upon it.
Like a sandy hill with a firmly fixed tent peg.
ياعاذِليO my reproacher أَناI مَنthe one whose سَمِعتَyou heard حَديثَهُhis story
فَعَساكَso perhaps you تَحنوshow tenderness أَوor لَعَلَّكَperhaps you تَرفُقُshow gentleness
O my reproacher, I am the one whose story you have heard;
O you who blame me, I am the one whose talk you heard,
so perhaps you will show tenderness, or perhaps be gentle.
May you have mercy or perhaps you will be gentle.
لَوif كُنتَyou were مِنّاamong us حَيثُwhere تَسمَعُyou hear أَوor تَرىyou see
لَرَأَيتَyou would see ثَوبَthe garment الصَبرِpatience كَيفَhow يُمَزَّقُis torn apart
If you were with us, where you could hear or see,
If you were with us when you hear or see,
you would see how the garment of patience is torn.
You would see how the garment of patience is torn.
وَرَأَيتَand you would see أَلطَفَthe tenderest عاشِقَينِtwo lovers تَشاكَياcomplained to each other
وَعَجِبتَand you would marvel مِمَّنat one who لاnot يُحِبُّloves وَيَعشَقُand adores
And you would see the tenderest pair of lovers share their sorrows,
And you would see the most gentle of lovers complaining,
and marvel at anyone who neither loves nor adores.
And you would wonder at one who does not love and fall in love.
أَيَسومُنيdo they demand of me? العُذّالُthe reproachers عَنهُapart from him تَصَبُّراًpatient restraint
وَحَياتِهِby his life قَلبيmy heart أَرَقُّmore tender وَأَشفَقُand more anxious
Do the reproachers demand that I patiently forgo him?
Do the blamers accuse me of patience towards him?
By his life, my heart is too tender and too anxious.
Yet his life is more precious to my heart and I am more compassionate.
إِنif عَنَّفواthey rebuke أَوor خَوَّفواthey intimidate أَوor سَوَّفواthey delay
لاnot أَنثَنيI turn back لاnot أَنتَهيI desist لاnot أَفرَقُI fear
If they rebuke, intimidate, or put me off,
If they denounce or frighten or procrastinate,
I do not turn back, desist, or fear.
I will not turn away, not stop, not separate.
أَبَداًalways أَزيدُI grow مَعَwith الوِصالِunion تَلَهُّفاًin longing
كَالعِقدِlike the necklace فيon جيدِthe neck المَليحَةِthe beautiful woman يَقلَقُmoves restlessly
Always, with union, my longing grows,
I will forever increase in yearning as I near union,
like a necklace moving restlessly on a lovely woman's neck.
Like a pendant on the neck of a beautiful maiden that shakes.
وَيَزيدُنيand he increases my تَلَفاًruin فَأَذكُرُso I mention فِعلَهُhis deed
كَالمِسكِlike musk تَسحَقُهُcrush it الأَكُفُّthe hands فَيَعبَقُso it gives off fragrance
And he increases my ruin, so I tell of his deed,
And his actions increase me in dissolution so I remember
like musk that hands crush, making it give off fragrance.
Like musk, if crushed by palms, it will perfume.
ياO قاتِليmy slayer إِنّيindeed I عَلَيكَfor you لَمُشفِقٌtruly anxious
ياO هاجِريmy forsaker إِنّيindeed I إِلَيكَfor you لَشَيِّقُtruly yearning
O my slayer, truly I am anxious for you;
O my killer, I am compassionate towards you,
O you who forsake me, truly I yearn for you.
O one I love, I long for you.
وَأَذاعَand spread abroad أَنّيthat I قَدalready سَلَوتُكَI forgot you مَعشَرٌa group
ياO رَبِّmy Lord لاmay not عاشواthey live لِذاكَfor that وَلاand may not بَقواthey endure
And a group has spread word that I have forgotten you;
And a group has spread that I reconciled with you,
O Lord, for that may they neither live nor endure!
O Lord, may they not live for that or remain.
ماnothing أَطمَعَgave hope to العُذّالَthe reproachers إِلّاexcept أَنَّنيthat I
خَوفاًout of fear عَلَيكَfor you إِلَيهِمُtoward them أَتَمَلَّقُI flatter
Nothing gave the reproachers hope except that I,
Nothing made the blamers hope
out of fear for you, flatter them.
Except that out of fear for you I flatter them.
وَإِذاand if وَعَدتُI promised الطَرفَthe eye فيكَconcerning you بَهجَعَةٍwith a brief slumber
فَاِشهَدthen bear witness عَلَيَّagainst me بِأَنَّنيthat I لاءَصدُقُI do not speak truth
And if, in loving you, I promise my eyes a brief sleep,
And if I promised you a happy glance,
then bear witness against me that I do not speak the truth.
Then witness against me that I do not speak truthfully.
فَعَلامَso why قَلبُكَyour heart لَيسَis not بِالقَلبِthe heart الَّذيwhich
قَدindeed كانَwas لِيَfor me مِنهُfrom it المُحِبُّthe loving one المُشفِقُthe caring one
Why, then, is your heart no longer the heart
Why is your heart not the heart that
whose love and tender care I once enjoyed?
Used to be for me, the loving, compassionate one?
وَأَظُنُّand I think خَدَّكَyour cheek شامِتاًgloating بِفِراقِناat our parting
فَلَقَدfor indeed نَظَرتُI looked إِلَيهِat it وَهوَand it was مُخَلَّقُperfumed with saffron
And I think your cheek gloats over our parting,
And I think your cheek was gloating over our separation
for I looked at it, and it was scented with saffron perfume.
For I looked at it distorted and frown.
وَلَقَدand indeed سَعَيتُI strove إِلىtoward العَلاءِeminence بِهِمَّةٍwith resolve
تَقضيdecrees لِسَعيِيfor my striving أَنَّهُthat it لايُلحَقُcannot be overtaken
And I have striven toward eminence with a resolve
And I strove for the heights with determination,
that decrees my striving cannot be overtaken.
My endeavor concludes that it cannot be attained.
وَسَرَيتُand I traveled by night فيthrough لَيلٍa night كَأَنَّas though نُجومَهُits stars

And I traveled through a night whose stars seemed,
And I traveled by night as if its stars
in their excessive jealousy, to stare at me,
Were intensely staring at me due to their jealousy.
حَتّىuntil وَصَلتُI reached سُرادِقَthe pavilion المَلِكِthe king الَّذيwho

until I reached the pavilion of the king,
Until I reached the pavilion of the king who
at whose gate kings stand seeking sustenance.
Kings stand at his door begging.
وَوَقَفتُand I stood مِنbefore مَلِكِthe king الزَمانِthe age بِمَوقِفٍin a place

And I stood before the king of the age in a place
And I stood before the king of time in a stand
where I found the heart of Time beating.
Where I found the heart of fate pulsating therein.
فَإِلَيكَso away with you ياO نَجمَstar السَماءِheaven فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I

So away with you, O star of heaven, for I
So to you, O star of the sky, I
have seen Najm al-Din appear, shining bright.
Have seen the star of religion brilliantly shine for me.
الصالِحُal-Salih المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwho لِزَمانِهِfor his age

Al-Salih, the king whose age has
The good king, whose era
a beauty and splendor in which Time takes pride.
Has beauty that bewilders time and gives it splendor.
مَلِكٌa king يُحَدِّثُnarrates عَنon the authority of أَبيهِhis father وَجَدِّهِand his grandfather

سَنَدٌa chain of transmission لَعَمرُكَby your life فيin العُلىeminence لايُلحَقُcannot be matched
A king who narrates on his father's and grandfather's authority—
A king who brings tidings of his father and grandfather,
a chain of transmission in glory, by your life, beyond compare.
A pillar, by your life, in the heights that cannot be attained.

Even eyes have bowed down to him in awe;
To him even eyes prostrated in awe
do you not see them lower their gaze when he approaches?
Or do you not see them lowered when he comes?

His domain is broad, its surroundings fertile;
Of spacious resolve, flourishing are his sides,
how many a Sadir and Khawarnaq stand there!
So many plains and meadows are next to him.

For life is troubled except beneath his protection,
Life without being in his precincts is miserable
and sustenance is straitened except from his hands.
And sustenance, without his hands, is constrained.
ياعِزَّO the glory مَنof one who أَضحىhas become إِلَيهِto him يَنتَميbelongs

Oh, the honor of one who comes to belong to him,
O might of one who has become affiliated with him
and the eminence of one who holds fast to him!
And height of one who has held fast to him by night.

I swear, gracious action is no affectation
I swear the fine traits are not affectations in him
in him, nor is noble character put on.
Nor is the noble nature pretended.

He invites delegations to his wealth, as though
He calls the delegations to his wealth, it is as if
he were cursing it, for its gathered whole is scattered.
He calls for its dissolution for it becomes fragmented.

His steeds forever yearn for mounted combat,
His steeds forever yearn for the wilderness,
eagerly looking toward it and longing for it.
For them there is longing and desire.

The army displays rapture at his might;
The stringed instruments reveal their harmony for his authority
so the brown lances dance, and the swords clap.
Drums dance and swords clap.

Within the folds of his armor is a valiant lion;
In his shining sword’s sheath, a brave, intrepid blade
beneath his temperament lies a radiant full moon.
Under the sheath, like a rising full moon.

He waters the spears with enemies' blood in battle,
It irrigates the spears with the blood of enemies in battle
so they bear heads as fruit and put forth leaves.
Thus it bears fruit with heads and becomes verdant.

He advances, his army preceded by a host of dread—
He goes forth, preceding his army in awe,
a host on which Time chokes and gags.
An army that overwhelms time and illuminates it.

He has filled hearts with awe and love:
He filled hearts with awe and love
for might is feared, and noble deeds adored.
So courage is feared and virtues loved.

His steeds will traverse the horizons of the lands,
His steeds will tour the regions of the lands
and in every pass a host of his will be seen.
And for him, in each expanse, there is a meeting place.

At your service, O you whose command cannot be opposed!
I am at your service, O one whose command has no opponent
And when he calls, Capella does not delay.
And if the lame is called, he will not resist.
لَبَّيكَat your service ياO خَيرَbest المُلوكِthe kings بِأَسرِهِمall of them

At your service, O best of all kings,
I am at your service, O best of kings among them
and mightiest of those toward whom she-camels are driven with song!
And most honored one, the dainty are challenged to him.
لَبَّيكَat your service أَلفاًa thousand times أَيُّهاO المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwhose

At your service a thousand times, O king
A thousand times, O king who
whose scattered bounty has united hearts.
His gifts have brought together hearts that were separated.
وَعَدَلتَand you dealt justly حَتّىuntil مابِهاnone in it مُتَظَلِّمٌone complaining of injustice

And you have been just until none there complains of wrong,
You were just until none in the land were wronged,
and you have given until none there seeks sustenance.
And you were generous until none were left wanting.

I am the one you summoned, who has answered you swiftly;
I am the one you called and I responded hastily,
this praise is his, and so is this speech.
This praise is for him as are these words.
أَلفَيتُI found سوقاًa market لِلمَكارِمِfor noble deeds وَالعُلىand eminence

I found a marketplace for noble deeds and eminence,
I found a market for virtues and loftiness,
so I knew that excellence finds a ready market there.
So I knew generosity overflows therein.

O you—whenever you promise your petitioners their wishes,
O you, when promising a wish, hands immediately fulfill it,
your gifts declare, 'He speaks and keeps his word.'
His gifts say he speaks truthfully and keeps his word.
ياO مَنyou whom رَفَضتُI cast aside الناسَthe people حينَwhen لَقيتُهُI met him

حَتّىuntil ظَنَنتُI thought بَأَنَّهُمthat they لَمhad not يُخلَقواthey were created
O you—when I met you, I cast all others aside,
O you, I rejected people when I met him,
until I thought they had never been created.
To the point I thought they were not even created.
قَيَّدتُI tethered فيin مِصرٍEgypt إِلَيكَto you رَكائِبيmy riding-camels

In Egypt, I tethered my riding-camels to you;
I tied my mounts in Egypt, heading towards you,
others travel west at times, and east.
While others roam a land or head east.
وَحَلَلتُand I alighted عِندَكَwith you إِذwhen حَلَلتُI alighted بِمَعقِلٍin a stronghold

And when I alighted with you, I alighted in a stronghold
And I resided with you when I resided in a stronghold,
beside which Marid and al-Ablaq are cast aside.
Where a demon and ghost are confronted.
وَتَيَقَّنَand became certain الأَقوامُthe people أَنِّيَthat I بَعدَهاafter it

And the people became certain that thereafter I
And people became certain that after it
would never be outstripped in reaching the ranks of eminence.
I will never attain the highest ranks.
فَرُزِقتُso I was granted مالَمwhat ... not يُرزَقواthey were granted وَنَطَقتُand I uttered ماwhat

So I was granted what they were not, and uttered what
So I was granted what they were not granted and I spoke what
they did not utter, and attained what they did not attain.
They did not speak and attained what they did not attain.
