كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing مِنكَfrom you مَقبولُaccepted
وَعَلىand upon العَينَينِthe two eyes مَحمولُborne
Everything from you is welcome,
Everything from you is acceptable
And borne upon my two eyes.
And light upon the eyes
وَالَّذيand whatever يُرضيكَpleases you مَنof تَلفيmy ruin
هَيِّنٌtrifling عِنديto me وَمَبذولُand freely offered
And whatever pleases you of my ruin
And what pleases you, though difficult
Is a trifle to me and freely offered.
Is easy for me and given
لاdo not تَخَفfear إِثماًsin وَلاnor حَرَجاًblame
فَدَمُfor the blood العُشّاقِthe lovers مَطلولُunavenged
Fear neither sin nor blame,
Fear no sin nor constraint
For lovers' blood goes unavenged.
For the blood of lovers flows free
وَعَلىand despite ماwhat فيكَin you مِنof صَلَفٍarrogance
أَنتَyou مَأمونٌtrusted وَمَأمولُand hoped for
And despite the arrogance in you,
Despite your indifference
You are trusted and hoped for.
You are secure and hoped for
وَيحَalas for صَبٍّa lovesick lover فيin مَحَبَّتِكُمlove for you
كَثُرَتhas grown plentiful فيهِabout him الأَقاويلُthe talk
Alas for one passionately in love with you,
Oh long passion for your love
About whom there is so much talk.
Many words have increased
وَعَجيبٌand strange ماwhat بُليتُI have been afflicted بِهِwith it
أَناI مَعذورٌexcused وَمَعذولُand reproached
And strange is what I have been afflicted with:
Wondrous what I've endured
I am excused and reproached.
I'm excused and accused
ليI have حَبيبٌa beloved لاnot أَبوحُI speak openly بِهِof him
أَناI مِنهُby him اليَومَtoday مَقتولُslain
I have a beloved of whom I do not speak openly;
I have a lover I don't confess
Today I am slain by him.
Today I'm killed by him
مالِكيmy master فيin خُلقِهِhis nature مَلَلٌboredom
أَناI مَملوكٌa slave وَمَملولُand found tiresome
My master is prone to boredom by nature;
My master is bored of me
I am his slave, and he has tired of me.
I'm owned and controlled
فَإِلىso for كَمhow long أَنتَyou ياO سَكَنيmy solace
كُلُّevery وَعدٍpromise مِنكَfrom you مَمطلولُdeferred
So how long will you go on, O my solace,
To what end are you, my joy
With every promise from you deferred?
Every promise from you delayed
وَإِذاand if مامُتُّI do die مِنof ظَمَإٍthirst
لاجَرىmay it not flow مِنfrom بَعدِيَafter me النيلُthe Nile
And if I die of thirst,
And if I die of thirst
May the Nile never flow after me!
The Nile won't flow after me
