قَدindeed أَتىhas come العيدُEid وَماand not عِنwith me (first fragment)
ديwith me (second fragment) لَهُfor it ماwhat يَقتَضيهِit requires it
Eid has come, yet I lack
The feast has come, yet I've no joy;
what it calls for.
Nothing I long for comes my way.
غابَwas absent عَنfrom عَينَيَّmy two eyes فيهِduring it
I desire it
Gone from my sight during it
All I desire is lost to me;
is everything I desire.
Vanished from sight this holiday.
لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge كَيفَhow أَنتُمyou (plural)
أَيُّهاO الأَحبابُbeloved ones فيهِduring it
I wish I knew how you are,
My friends, I wonder, how fare you
O beloved ones, during it.
On this unhappy festive day?
