    Come, friend, sing to me,

and fill the cup and give me drink.

Rise with us, drinking companion; let us

The sky is now wrapped in a cloak

    of dusky cloud,

and morning has appeared like the

    gladness on a benefactor's face.

Friend, take it and bring it,

and unveil it for me, and adorn it.

so let me drink it—perhaps I may [revive]—

    a wine whose

For it is light, and all but the

    light within it has perished.

    A wine that brings delight

    to hearts and eyes.

    It has lain—count whatever span

you wish—in the depths of a storeroom.

So whenever you pass it round,

name it for me, and name me,

    Spare me pretence

    before others, or self-adornment.

For, by my life, I mistrust

this excessive observance of the Sunnah.

My master, after this and that,

come, tell me, and make it clear.

    لَستَ عِندي بِهَيِّنِ

    You have all the goodwill you desire;

you are not of little worth to me.

    is an adorned feast day.

he is a bough for one who gathers fruit.

    أَنا عَن عاذِلي غَني

    You who reproach me about him, do not go on;

I have no need of my reproacher.

I do not listen, nor do I heed.
