لِلَّهِto God (an exclamation of admiration) بُستانيmy garden وَماand what
قَضَّيتُI fulfilled فيهِin it مِنَof المآرِبthe wishes
By God, how splendid my garden, and all
My garden belongs to God, and whatever
The wishes I fulfilled within it!
Calamities I have suffered in it.
لَهَفيmy yearning عَلىfor زَمَنيmy days بِهِin it
وَالعَيشُand life مُخضَرُّverdant الجَوانِبthe sides
How I yearn for my days there,
I yearn for my time in it,
When life was green on every side!
With life green on all sides.
فَيَروقُنيso it delights me وَالجَوُّand the air مِنfrom
هُit ساكِنٌstill وَالقَطرُand the rain ساكِبpouring
So it delights me, while the air within
So it pleases me, with the air
It is still, and the rain pours down.
Calm from it, and the rain pouring down.
وَلَكَمand how often بَكَرتُI came early لَهُto it وَقَدand already
بَكَرَتcame early لَهُto it غُرُّbright white السَحائِبthe clouds
And how often I came early to it, when already
How often I have risen early for it,
The white clouds had come early to it!
As the clouds rose early for it.
وَالطَلُّand the dew فيon أَغصانِهِits branches
And the dew upon its branches
The morning dew in its branches
Resembles necklaces upon bosoms.
Tells of necklaces in strands.
وَتَفَتَّحَتand opened أَزهارُهُits blossoms
فَتَأَرَّجَتthen spread their fragrance مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبside
And its blossoms opened,
Its flowers have opened,
Then spread their fragrance from every side.
And spread fragrance on every side.
وَبَداand appeared عَلىon دَوحاتِهِits spreading trees
ثَمَرٌfruit كَأَذنابِlike the tails of الثَعالِبthe foxes
And on its spreading trees appeared
Fruit has appeared on its branches,
Fruit like the tails of foxes.
Like the tails of foxes.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though آصالُهُits late afternoons
ذَهَبٌgold عَلىupon الأَوراقِthe leaves ذائِبmelting
And it is as though its late afternoons were
Its roots seem as if
Gold melting upon the leaves.
Melted gold on the leaves.
فَهُناكَand there كَمhow many ذَهَبِيَّةٍa golden draught of wine
ليI have فيin الولوعِardent fondness بِهاfor it مَذاهِبways
And there, how many a golden draught of wine—
So there I have as much gold
My passion for it takes so many forms!
As I have passions for it.
