Your image has come to wear, from my heart,

a robe embroidered with pure-white visions, splendidly adorned.

You were like that deceitful bird, the one

the shepherds of lambs see swooping over the meadow:

they race through grass and flowers toward it,

but if shepherds draw near it, it flies off, exultant and singing.

It keeps on skimming low, then darting free,

    neither far away nor ever drawing near;

and keeps distracting a shepherd from his flock

and from his flute, until he loses his way.

And you have indeed consumed my thoughts—may love preserve you—

and turned me from poetry when I followed you gladly.

And upon the mirror of my poetry lies a cloud

of your love-distraught breaths, veiling every mirror.

And if the spirit longs to break free, it is hindered

by the echo of your spirit, drooping-winged and calling.

Your whisper has beguiled me, so I no longer listen

to the melodies of the god of Evil, nor remain aware.

And my lyre—what has become of it? And my fingers

have spent the night toying idly with your hair.

Could it not be granted, O daughter of Love, for one hour

that my spirit climb the naked breasts,

and from their heights glimpse a horizon of enchantment

met by a radiant beam of love?

I shall cry out in poems if ever I see it,

and welcome inspiration, easy and well-disposed.

Whenever a kiss hovers on the horizon of your mouth

    and my lips rise to meet it, all that ails me is gone;

and I return joyfully to the lord of Poetry, listening

to the rustle of his wings as he calls my imagination.
