The universe has become light and fire
The universe has turned into light and fire,
O oppressors, where to flee?
O oppressors, where is the escape?
Storms fill the east and west
Hurricanes fill the East and the West,
As flames roar around them
And around them, sparks have begun to rage.
Whenever death closes in on a tyrant
Whenever death encircled an era,
A storm descends upon his corpse
A hurricane leaped upon its coffin.
So the dormant wrath ignited into wrath
A flame faded, so another flame arose,
And the explosion led to another explosion
And an explosion passed, so another explosion came.
So revolt, O people, for the universe is not content
So storm forth, O peoples, for the universe is not satisfied,
Unless the free revolt
Unless the free men storm like the wind.
And break the shackles off the tyrants' necks
And shatter the chains upon the heads of tyrants,
And revolt, for the victors are the revolutionaries
And revolt, for the victors are the revolutionaries.
A whisper, then an awakening, then a chant
A whisper, then an awakening, then a shout,
Then an uprising, then a revolt and triumph
Then an uprising, then a revolution, and victory.
This is the tale of nations told
This is the story of the peoples, told to mankind,
By the wrecker of Caesar's crumbling crown
By the collapsed crown of Caesar.
The sluggish hand of the old clock stirred the east
The East moved the hands of the slumbering clock,
Rising to say the dawn has broken
So it rose to declare: The day has dawned.
Pass, O night, for the eyes of the masses
So begone, O night, for the eyes of the masses,
Are no longer veiled in blindness
Are not blind, nor is there a veil over them.
You who stand in the bustle of life
O you who stand amidst the crowds of the world,
With your giddy heads swirling
With dizziness binding your heads,
If you stand still, I see no standstill in history
If you stand still, I do not see the stance of history
That would spare its steps any waiting
Being hindered in its steps by waiting.
So make the right a throne of injustice
So place a throne of injustice on the right,
For the throne knows no left
For the throne knows not the left.
O faces of the famished, O tale of woe
O faces of the starving, O story that has become
That has citizens from lands afar as motifs
A set of books written by my countrymen,
Its events woven by the tyrant executioner
Its terrible events woven by an executioner,
His rusty sword an emblem of might
Whose ugly sword boasted of its power.
You are to hunger a yellowing
Upon you, the sallowness of hunger appeared,
While it is to soil, in its hands a yellowing
While for him, it was the glint of gold in his hands.
The despot disappoints, history does not record
The tyrant has failed; history writes not,
A fang or even claws for him
Of a fang for him, nor of claws.
We alone are heirs to this earth
For it is we who are the inheritors of this world,
All glory and pride are ours
Ours is all the glory and the pride.
For in the yellowness of autumn is an uprising
Indeed, in the yellowing of autumn there is an uprising,
Each of its miracles a sign
From whose miracles came the spring of May.
Say to those whose souls fear has deflated and terror
Say to him whose soul was broken by terror,
Has snatched the determination from their eyes
And from whose eyes defeat stole the light:
Glance between east and west
Shift your gaze between East and West,
Your heart gladdened at the glance’s audacity
Your frightened heart will praise the sight.
Take the cup of tyrants from the hands of its pourer
You will find the cup of tyrants, in the hand of its server,
And smash it, dry the dregs
Broken shards where the wine dries up.
Tomorrow the shackles will shatter and collapse
Tomorrow the chains shall be crushed, and there shall fall,
Above the wreck of its crown, colonialism
Upon the scattered remains of its crown, colonialism itself.
Does the envoy and consultant linger
The morning has shimmered, O my land; does there remain,
In your haven, my country, as dawn breaks?
Within your sanctuary, the Ambassador and the Advisor?
Send forth the cry for freedom, send it forth
Send forth the cry of liberation, send it forth,
As the seas send forth their murmur
Just as the seas send forth their roaring waves.
Your heated passion for struggle has not relented
Your free people have never turned away from struggle,
Never will captivity endure
No, for it is impossible that captivity should endure.
And if it were a planet traversing the horizons
And even if he were a planet traversing the horizons,
Its orbit would not curb its path
No orbit could limit his steps.
The world of oppressors, the oppressed has demolished
The world of the oppressors—the oppressed has destroyed
Its pillars, so collapse contained it
Its pillars, so it was engulfed by collapse.
If it remained standing, it was for death
So if it remains standing, it stands only for death,
And if it marched, the march spelled suicide
And if it moves, the movement is suicide.
The place of shackles will in time become
The place where the chain once lay will soon become,
Upon its wounded wrists, a cave
Upon the wounded limbs, a laurel of victory.
