You have utterly worn away my whole being, O Jamʿ,

With “will” and its sister, and “until” and “till.”

Have you not shown forbearance at the mention of a loyal youth,

A loving one—or at the mention of a youth who acted gallantly?

I gave you love from the very center of my breast,

That utterly severs every resolve to forget.

And the call to prayer was made, so I rose to hasten,

Yet I could not rise, nor was it possible.

The people performed their Friday prayer, and we returned

With a heart that remembrance of you had crushed to pieces.

As though God, when he hastened and we returned,

Had spoken: “Indeed, your strivings are diverse.”
