لما بعثت بلحظي
في خد جُلْنارَ نارا
When I sent, with my glance,
a fire into Julnar's cheek,
لوت بعقرب صدغ
إذا رأى النار نارا
she twisted a scorpion-like temple-lock
that fled when it saw the fire.
لما انتحى القوم نجدا
على المهارى مهارا
When the company headed toward Najd,
riding Mahri camels with skill,
أرسلت من حر وجدي
إلى بخارَى بخارا
I sent, from the heat of my longing,
vapor to Bukhara.
والدهر طالب ثار
إذا رأى الثار ثارا
And Time seeks blood vengeance:
when it sees vengeance, it rises in fury.
أودى بإيوان كسرى
ولم يَدَع دار دارا
It brought ruin upon Khosrow's palace hall
and did not spare Dara's house.
يا صاحبَيَّ أفيضاً
على العقار عقارا
O my two companions, pour
wine upon the estate,
فقد كستني عقاري
من الخمار خمارا
for my wine has clothed me
in a hangover's veil.
قد كان حسبك مزجاً
والآن إن سار سارا
Once, diluted wine was enough for you;
and now, if it goes, it goes.
ورب سيل حرون
من ثقبة الفار فارا
And many a headstrong torrent
has gushed from the mouse's hole.
لا زلت يا ابن كثير
في الدهر إن جار جارا
May you ever, O Ibn Kathir,
be a protector when Time turns unjust.
من دون مجدك ليث
يُخيف مَن زار زارا
Before your glory stands a lion
that frightens whoever visits, roaring.
كسوت عمر الأعادي
كيوم ذي قار قارا
You clothed your enemies' lives
in pitch, as on the day of Dhu Qar.
مهرج فربعك خلد
للغوث مار ثِمارا
Celebrate Mihrigan: your dwelling is a paradise,
providing fruits for succor.
والنار ترمي شراراً
في الصحن ثار فثارا
And the fire flings sparks
into the courtyard; they rose, then rose again.
