Shame on this age! What is its purpose

in a deed whose cause is not clear to me?

What harm have the noble done it? For

its calamities fall on none but them.

Has it found no room among others than you,

among those whose tails are equated with their heads?

The guest does not know where his lodging is,

nor does glory see where its refuge lies.

Why do I see the noble man's blood being lost,

yet never see the scoundrel's gold being lost?

He prospers whose baseness is his means,

nor does he escape whose crime is his noble lineage.

Whoever wishes that time should not afflict him,

let honor be the chief thing he gives away.

May God grant us relief from you, O age,

reckless, whose falcon is hunted by its bustard.

O famished one, hungry in every limb! Never

is its hunger stilled except by a virtuous man.

    O fire blazing among humankind,

with generosity, glory, and bounty as its firewood!

O hunter, with eminence as its prey,

and plunderer, with beauty as its plunder!

O my lords, let not your bones be exposed

to time's bite, should its dog grow fierce.

For time has two colors; it never stays in

one state; swift are its shifts among people.

It brought good you did not foresee; likewise

it brought evil you did not expect.

May God protect you; He is enough for you

against an age whose wonders never give us a day's respite.

How close victory is to your hopes!

If God wills, its veils will be lifted.
