O soul, be patient, or else perish in anguish.

And it is little enough that you should shatter into pieces in love.

I shed tears; had you been fair, I would have shed blood.

And had you been just, both my eyes would have overflowed together.

Woe to the nights! I have found them treacherous.

Woe to hopes! I have found them deceptive.

For ruin is what the builder raised, and for undoing what

The diligent man pursued, and for scattering what he gathered.

Time called—no willing answer to it when it called,

And though I answered, no glad service to it when it strove.

And no honor to the couriers that arrived,

And no joy in the star that rose.

Does night know what morning bestowed on us

Of horror? Does time know what it has done?

Do the two bearers of death's news know—may their hearing fail—

With what calamity they struck our ears?

And why did time's eye not go blind when it looked?

And how did the bearer of death's news not fall mute the morning he announced death?

A calamity too great for collars to be torn for it,

And we would have torn our ribs for it, had that availed.

A calamity that lavished—no welcome to its robe—

Upon kings the garb of bereavement, worn as armor.

Oh, how wretched its arrival—a calamity that came by night!

And how ill-omened its morning—a misfortune that befell!

No wonder if I overflow with solace and consolation

In what I pour forth; nor is it ingratitude if I desist.

For if I speak, anguish has made me speak,

And if I fall silent, the enormity of the loss has done it.

O you whose example is followed in every worthy deed,

And looked to in noble pursuits as a banner to be followed,

Your brother has gone to where the Prophet went,

And his counterpart; will you not accept him as a follower?

God has honored his dwelling and made it fragrant,

And he has attained a lofty station among the ranks of Paradise's gardens.

If you praise God in gratitude for His blessing,

Then be mindful of God in patience when He takes it back.

Or, if you know that all people have become

Equal in the calamity with which you have been afflicted,

Then patience is more becoming, unless sorrow

Brings him back; then do not hold back your grief.

An evil befell, but its calamity did not turn you

Against God; for what He warded off was worse than it.
