I describe a night as black as obsidian,

Veiling the dawn, jet-black in its gloom.

    Were the world folded into it, it would fit within;

Or were deprivation woven from it, it would take shape.

    العمر فيه نقطة لو انفرج

    A night whose stars refuse to move, whose path is pitch-black;

A lifetime within it would be a dot, if it opened out.

And all time is among its parts, without objection—

The least of what it holds. By night, when night journeys on,

Rather, by dawn's radiance when dawn breaks:

Indeed you, Sahl—and the claim has proofs—

Are the leader of those who pray and those who fast and make pilgrimage.

O Sahl, O purest stock of interwoven lineage!

O best of all who have walked the earth, living or departed!

O son of the noblest lineage, wherever its branches intertwine!

And a sight in you that gladdens whoever beholds it,

And bounty that would prevail if it vied with the sea in abundance,

And a rank that has risen above the two Simāk stars!

O critic of my praise of him, consider—do not be obstinate.

He has surpassed the sun, outstripping it by degrees:

For his fruit is within reach, and the path to him is near,

While she, when one tries to reach her, is beyond any climb.

And his light is knowledge; hers is blazing heat.
