leaping like lightning when it flashes,

surging like a torrent when it sweeps downhill,

roaring like thunder when it rumbles.

than we stood as a target for death,

before one who weakened the back and made it creak.

"O men, help against this unfathomable peril!"

I edged toward him, brandishing the sword.

  14. ثم قضى اللّه وخيراً ما قضى

in death's cloak as he came forward.

  20. وصرت حَرّانَ إليه غرضا

the two willingly shared death's cup,

من كان لا يصفى الولاء ممحضا

in a state to which stands exposed

whoever has not offered pure, unmixed allegiance

  23. لآل طه والوصيّ المرتضى
