The tall trees adorn themselves to please a melodious nightingale
The beauty adorned itself to please a warbling nightingale
From God's garden: our two hearts are its wings.
From the gardens of Allah: our hearts are its wings

It falls and its right wing does not avail its left wing

The most sublime worship, a Lord who tortures me
Without hope, while I accept him and love him.
Without hope, pleasure or desire

Where is the humiliation of complaint and its delight
Is the glory of sovereignty and rank to lovers?
For lovers, the glory of kingdom and status is naught

People divided their world and its discord
While the lover possessed a world of his own.
And the one who loves his world stands alone

The Creators - beyond the mind their secret -
Both belong to the unseen: love and God.
Both mystical to the unseen: love and God

We have beheld neither, yet worshipped each.

I cheapened my eyelids for tears then drew first light
In dawn's stillness, a vision of you that made it precious.

Did the vision of your lips give them its intoxicating fire to drink?
A specter of your smile brought and quenched

Had I not protected it, my passion would have bared it

It whispered to us of scent making rounds on lips
We did not envy it, but made it jealous.
We were not deceived yet we were seduced

For we are most deserving of what we have sipped

After separation, it greeted it and offered itself as ransom.
After parting, so greeted and ransomed

Would that the longing that exhausted it had destroyed it.
If only the yearning that weakened would diminish

The midday heat fluttered into dew when we gave it drink.
The pitcher dripped dew when we watered it

The soul's childhood is the dearest thing I take pride in;
The soul's innocence is what I argue with
To me, the fiercest love is the most faithful.
And love most violent in me and faithful

Passionate, most lofty in it its fervor
And love's basest—exalted be love!—is its craftiest.
And love - sublime is love - lowliest enslaves it

You are the mirage, agony, fervor and blush
Yet shade and waters soothe the eye.

Upon love and sacrifice debased it
لاهٍcarefree ومحنتيwhile my ordeal العصماءُpeerless داميةٌbleeding
راوٍsated ومنand from لوعتيmy anguish الشمّاءproud سُقياهُhis drink
Carefree, while my peerless ordeal is bleeding;
My torment forever painful
Sated, his drink drawn from my proud anguish.
Quenching and my thirst forever sated
ماno ضجّcried out فيwithin قلبهِhis heart جرحٌa wound فكابدهُso he endured it
ولاnor ألمَّbefell بهِhim وجدٌpassionate longing فعاناهُso he suffered it
No wound cried out within his heart for him to endure,
No wound in his heart he endured
Nor did passionate longing befall him for him to suffer.
Nor pain afflicted him he suffered
تضنُّare miserly باللهفةِwith yearning الحرّىburning جوانحهُhis breast
والقلبُand the heart أخصبهُits richest بالنورin light أسخاهُits most generous
His breast withholds burning yearning;
His wings are stingy with fervent yearning
The heart richest in light is the most generous.
The heart most fertile with light he poured
فماand did not ترشّفتُI sip إيماناًfaith بمعبدهِwithin his temple
ولاnor شممتُI smelled طيوباًperfumes فيin مصلّاهُhis place of prayer
I sipped no faith within his temple,
I never gained faith in his temple
Nor smelled perfumes in his place of prayer.
Nor smelled incense in his prayer niche
ناءٍfar عنfrom النارthe fire لوif طافَcircled اللهيبُthe flame بهِaround him
لوهّجتwould set ablaze هذهthis الدنياworld شظاياهُhis shards
Far from the fire: had the flame circled him,
Safe from the fire even if engulfed by flames
His shards would have set this world ablaze.
It would ignite this world into sparks
ماnot الحسنُbeauty إلاbut لباناتٌdesires منمّقةٌembellished
لكنbut يؤلّههُmakes it divine أنّاthat we عشقناهُloved it passionately
Beauty is only embellished desires;
Beauty is only adorned idols
Our passionate love for it makes it divine.
But deifying it we desired it
يرضيهpleases him أنto يتشفّىtake revenge منupon مدامعِناour tears
لمnot نبكِwe wept منهُbecause of him ولكنّاbut we بكيناهُwept for him
It pleases him to take revenge upon our tears;
Content that from our tears it is sated
We did not weep because of him, but wept for him.
We did not cry from it, we cried it
حسبُenough الأحبّةِfor loved ones ذُلّاًas humiliation عارُthe disgrace غدرهمُof their betrayal
وحسبناand enough for us عزّةًas honor أنّاthat we غفرناهُforgave it
The disgrace of their betrayal is humiliation enough for loved ones;
The betrayal of loved ones disgrace their lowliness
It is honor enough for us that we forgave it.
And ours the dignity that we forgave
واalas لوعتاهُwhat anguish لقلبٍfor a heart لوif تُطاعwere granted لهto it
أمنيّةٌa wish، كُنتِyou would be أغلىthe dearest ماwhat تمنّاهُit wished for
Alas for a heart that, were a wish of its granted,
Woe to the craving of a heart obeyed
Would have you as the dearest thing it wished for.
You were most precious of what it craved
لوif خيّروهُthey offered it a choice كنوزَthe treasures الأرضِof the earth يملكُهاit would own them
أوor رَشفُsipping ثغرِكِyour lips كنزاًas a treasure ماnot تعدّاهُit went beyond it
Were it offered the choice of owning earth's treasures
If given treasures of the world to rule
Or a sip of your lips, it would go no further than that treasure.
Or sip from your lips, nothing surpasses
يهنيكmay it gladden you أنّكِthat you فيin نعمىbliss لمحنتهِfrom its ordeal
وأنّand that غدرَكِyour betrayal قبلَbefore الدهرِtime أشقاهُmade it miserable
May it please you that you find bliss in its ordeal
You are blessed your torment in direness
And that your betrayal made it miserable before time did.
That your betrayal time found most cruel
أغضىlowered its eyes النديُّthe gathering حياءًin shame حينwhen أنهبناwe surrendered as plunder
للشامتينَto the gloaters، هوىًa love كالروحِlike the soul صُنّاهُwe guarded it
The gathering lowered its eyes in shame when we surrendered
The beloved turns shyly when we were robbed
To gloaters a love we had guarded like our soul.
For the gloaters, a passion guarded like the soul
حسنٌa beauty خلقناهُwe created it منfrom ألوانِthe forms قُدرتِناof our power
فكيفَso how يكفرُdisbelieves فيناin us منone whom خلقناهُwe created
A beauty we created from the forms of our power—
Beauty we created from our might
How can one we created disbelieve in us?
So how can its creator among us cover it
لوif رفَّfluttered حُبُّكِyour love فيin بيداءَa desert لاهبةٍscorching
علىover الظماءِthe thirsty رحيقاًas nectar ماnot وردناهُwe came to drink it
Were your love to flutter in a scorching desert
Had your love fluttered in a blazing wilderness
As nectar over the thirsty, we would not come to drink it.
Onto thirst, a nectar we never tasted
جليتُI cleared طيفَكِyour apparition عنfrom عينيmy eyes فأسلمهُthen surrendered it
إلىto الدجىdarkness وإلىand to الإعصارthe whirlwind، مأواهُits refuge
I cleared your apparition from my eyes; then it was delivered
I unveiled your specter from my eye so surrendered it
To darkness and to the whirlwind by its refuge.
To darkness and storm, its abode
فياso alas لكنزٍfor a treasure شكتcomplained منهof it جواهرهُits jewels
وضاعَand became lost عنfrom نفسهِitself لمّاwhen أضعناهُwe lost it
Ah, a treasure whose jewels complained of it,
So a treasure I lamented
And which lost itself when we lost it.
Scattered from itself when discarded
صحاawoke الفؤادُthe heart الذيwhich قطّعتِهِyou tore it مزقاًinto shreds
حرّىburning الجراحthe wounds ولملمناand we gathered بقاياهُits remnants
The heart you tore into shreds awoke,
The heart awakened torn by you to pieces
Its wounds burning; we gathered its remnants.
Passionate for the wounds we gathered its remains
وماand did not سلاكِforget you ولاnor عزّاهُconsole it عنكِfor your loss هوىa love
ياah نعْمَblessed is غدركyour betrayal عزّاهُconsoled it وسلّاهُand made it forget
It did not forget you, nor did another love console it for your loss;
Nothing of your way or solaced it from you, a passion
Blessed be your betrayal: it consoled it and made it forget.
Yes, excellent was your betrayal, it solaced and comforted
