من حتوف تعانق الأرواحا

O specter of death, what frightens humankind

The specter of death: What frightens the deserts

O phantom of death: the terror of all mortals,

in deaths that embrace souls?

Of destinies that embrace souls

with fatal dooms that embrace the souls.

وجد النّاس في كؤوسك سمّا

وجد النّاس في كؤوسك سمّا

غير أنّي وجدت فيهنّ راحا

غير أنّي وجدت فيهنّ راحا

People found poison in your cups,

People found poison in your cups

People have found poison in your chalices,

but I found wine in them.

Yet I found in them comfort

yet I have found within them soothing wine.

فاسقنيها قد طال صحوي و مكثي

فاسقنيها قد طال صحوي و مكثي

و تمنّيت سكرة و رواحا

و تمنّيت سكرة و رواحا

So give it to me to drink; my sobriety and my lingering have lasted long,

So serve me more, prolonged has been my vigil and stay

So pour it for me, my sobriety and stay have lingered long,

and I have longed for intoxication and departure.

And I wished for intoxication and comfort

and I have wished for drunkenness and departure.

لا تبادر بها و قد نصل اللّيل

لا تبادر بها و قد نصل اللّيل

و ذرني حتّى أحيّي الصباحا

و ذرني حتّى أحيّي الصباحا

Do not hasten with it, now that night has faded,

Do not rush with it, for the night has arrived

Do not hasten it now that the night has faded,

and leave me until I greet the morning.

Leave me be, until the dawn revives

but let me be until I greet the morning.

و تمّهّل حتّى أودّ نور الشمس

و تمّهّل حتّى أودّ نور الشمس

إذ همّ أن يلوح فلاحا

إذ همّ أن يلوح فلاحا

And linger until I cherish the sun’s light,

Wait until I bid farewell to the sun’s light

And wait until I cherish the sunlight,

when it was about to gleam—and gleamed.

As it intends to shine farewell

as it strives to appear, and bursts into light.

ثمّ خذني إليك يا موت جذلان

ثمّ خذني إليك يا موت جذلان

طروبا إلى الردى مرتاحا

طروبا إلى الردى مرتاحا

Then take me to you, O Death, joyful,

Then take me to you, O gentle death

Then take me unto you, O Death, full of joy,

enraptured, going to death at ease.

Happily, to restful annihilation

eager for demise, and at perfect peace.

ذاك مصباح صبوتي وشبابي

ذاك مصباح صبوتي وشبابي

فتعجّل و أطفئ المصباحا

فتعجّل و أطفئ المصباحا

That is the lamp of my youthful passion and my youth;

That is the lamp of my youth and prime

That is the lamp of my passion and my youth,

so hurry, and put out the lamp.

So hurry and extinguish the lamp

so make haste, and extinguish the lamp.
