O poet of the Arabs, whose verse has traveled

Resounding, turned back by neither land nor sea,

Remember a friend in the port of Latakia,

When despair creeps into him, remembrance revives him.

O prince of generosity, magnanimity, and eminence,

Dearer than bounty are your radiant virtues:

Your eloquence, not the gardens' fragrance and enchantment,

And your nature, not clarified honey or wine.

I have been your companion for twenty years; uniting us

Are character and thought drawn from the loftiest literature.

And we defied the tyrants; never did

Their tyranny diminish our struggle or our patience.

And Time once bore down with its oppression

Upon us, yet Time could not make our bridle-bits yield.

And we shared the princedom between us:

Yours is prose within its horizons, and mine is poetry.

Kin, though not of one family or clan,

For character and innate nature are forms of kinship.

And family, though our forebears are far apart; for only

The noble, free man is a free man's brother in this world.

So cherish my loyalty as much as you can, for it is,

By your honor, a fine treasure if treasure is lost.
