على عتت الخطوب من العتاب

O Akram, our love is too pure and lofty

Our love is the noblest and most sublime

O Akram, our love is purer and more exalted,

for reproach, despite the fury of calamities.

Beyond the reproaches of suitors

Despite the fierce calamities, far above reproach.

و ما عزّيت حين ألمّ خطب

و ما عزّيت حين ألمّ خطب

مصابك في جلاته مصابي

مصابك في جلاته مصابي

And I offered no consolation when a calamity struck;

And I was not consoled when misfortunes pained me

And I offered no condolences when misfortune struck,

your affliction, in its gravest trials, was my own.

Your afflictions in adversity are my afflictions

For your affliction, in its magnitude, is mine.

أخا الجلّى : و رب أخ تعرّى

أخا الجلّى : و رب أخ تعرّى

لدى الجلّى عن الحسب القراب

لدى الجلّى عن الحسب القراب

O brother in dire adversity—and many a brother has stripped himself

O radiant brother, many a brother has been exposed

O brother in grave times: for many a brother is stripped bare,

of the honor of close kinship in dire adversity.

To reproach, though close kin

In times of crisis, of all close ties of kinship.

أحبّك للنبيل من المعالي

أحبّك للنبيل من المعالي

و للعطر السّريّ من الرغاب

و للعطر السّريّ من الرغاب

I love you for what is noble in lofty virtues,

I love you for the most noble qualities

I love you for the noblest of high virtues,

and for the noble fragrance of cherished desires.

And for the intimate fragrance, not vulgar desires

And for the exquisite fragrance of great aspirations.

و أنت إذا تحدتك الرزايا

و أنت إذا تحدتك الرزايا

ضياء الشمس يسخر بالسحاب

ضياء الشمس يسخر بالسحاب

And you, when calamities challenge you,

And when misfortunes challenge you

And you, whenever challenged by calamities,

are the sun's radiance, mocking the clouds.

The sun's brilliance mocks the clouds

Are the sunlight that mocks the clouds.

تحنّ إليك عند البعد روحي

تحنّ إليك عند البعد روحي

حنين الورد للنّطف العذاب

حنين الورد للنّطف العذاب

My soul yearns for you when we are apart,

My soul yearns for you in absence

My soul yearns for you when we are apart,

with the yearning of roses for sweet drops of water.

With a rose's yearning for raindrops

As roses yearn for sweet drops of dew.

و حبّك نعمة الدنيا و أحلى

و حبّك نعمة الدنيا و أحلى

من النّعمى شمائلك السوابي

من النّعمى شمائلك السوابي

And loving you is this world's blessing, and sweeter

And your love is the blessing of life and the sweetest

And your love is the blessing of this world, and sweeter

than bliss are your captivating qualities.

Sweeter to me than your charming glances

Than any blessing are your captivating virtues.
