من جوهر الله صيغ الشاعر الغرد
Neither rancor nor envy is the wine of my sorrows.
Neither rancor nor envy is the wine of my sorrows,
From God's essence the melodious poet was fashioned.
The poet molded from God's essence chirped.

I gave my heart's sorrows drink from his creed.
I watered the sorrows of my heart from his clay jug,
Grief intoxicated all that I cherish and believe.
So sorrow got drunk from what it fermented and believed.

and how the liver honors the embers of anguish.
And how the embers of anguish honored the liver.

Yes, the gift! And it suffices me that it was immersed,

Tearing apart the scent from my wound, hand and hand.

fragrance and suppleness are the arak tree's nature.

I have forgiveness from the handsome to pour it
as perfume upon all who harmed and all who hated.
As a scent on everyone who hurt me and envied me.

I deemed the oppressed too noble for my tears,
I forgave those who were persecuted by my tears
and went weeping for those who tyrannize and persecute.
And I went to cry for those who transgress and persecute.

Those who reap the world's gloating—
The harvesters of worldly glee, if they had not
without what they sowed yesterday, they would not have reaped.
Reaped what they yesterday sowed, they would not have harvested.

I thirsted, and the sun generously and proudly,
and went on, neither bowing nor seeking water.
I walked away, and the sun does not blame or respond.

فرنّح الشمس ما أشكو و ما أجد
I give her another draught from my heart, some of its anguish;
Perhaps it raised some of the agony of my heart,
what I lament and feel made the sun reel.
So the sun sobbed for what I complain and find.

For poetry and the sun this universe has no number,

Tyranny over light in the world has no number.

That honor and hunting would not leave us.

The hospitality offered calamities, when their tempests roar,
If the abodes of misfortunes roared with their tremors,

The generous had patience with adversity and endured.

in the sun's procession, rancor and inflamed eyes are shamed.
In the procession of the sun, envy and gravel are ashamed.

Injustice makes excuses in disgust,
as though, so abject in abasement, they had never existed:
As if from the disgrace of humiliation they did not find.

إلاّ به و له الأخبار و البرد
From a poet who made the world reel, so that it thronged
It settled in the monks’ monasteries flooding it
around none but him—his were the tidings and the couriers.
Yearning for children and love of leisure and comfort.

لاه فيسرف أحيانا و يقتصد
A face's wrinkles: lines swiftly sketched by a pen,
Those who vie with it for worldly gain, when they loot,
playful, sometimes lavish and sometimes sparing.
And those who vie with it for the next when they sing devotions.

A stature bearing ninety years, with neither weakness
Didn’t they carry it in the gentlest of their conscience
for the great journey, nor crookedness.
As if it is a scent they did not pray to or worship?

and an ember of affection in his heart's recesses.
A covenant of love and forgiveness is contracted.

And virgins of your poetry the young received you.

the full moon draws near, and the dusty earth recedes.
And the light and beauty in its slopes scattered?
