اليَومُtoday يَومُa day نَزاهةٍrecreation وَعُقارِand wine
وَتَقرّبand the drawing near of الآمالِhopes وَالأَوطارِand desires
Today is a day of recreation and wine,
Today is a day of purity and fragrance
And of hopes and desires drawing near.
As hopes and goals draw near
أَوَand (interrogative) ماnot تَرىyou see شَمسsun النَهارthe day قَدِalready اِختَفَتhas vanished
وَتَستَّرَتand hid itself عَنfrom أَعيُنeyes النظّارِthe onlookers
And do you not see that the day's sun has vanished
Or have you not seen the sun disappear?
And hidden itself from the eyes of onlookers?
Vanishing from viewers' eyes
وَالغَيثُand the rain سحّpoured غَمامُهits clouds فَكَأنّهso, as though it were
دَنِفٌa lovesick person بَكىwept مِنfrom شدّةintensity of التذكارِremembrance
And the rain poured from its clouds, as though it were
The rain poured down its clouds
A lovesick man who wept from the intensity of remembrance.
Like a sad song of memories
وَالبَرقُand the lightning لاحَflashed مِنَfrom السَماءthe sky كَأَنَّهُas though it were
سَيفٌa sword تَأَلّقgleamed فيin سَماءِa sky of غُبارِdust
And lightning flashed from the sky, as though it were
Lightning flashed across the sky
A sword that gleamed in a sky of dust.
Like a sword gleaming in a dusty sky
لاno شَيءthing أَحسَنُfiner فيهِin it مِنthan نَيلattaining المُنىwishes
بِمُدامةٍwith wine تَبدوappears كَشُعلَةlike a flame of نارِfire
Nothing is finer on this day than attaining one's wishes
Nothing is more beautiful than attaining desires
With wine that looks like a flame of fire.
With a cup that shines like a flame
لَولاwere it not for صِيامٌfasting عاقَنيhindered me عَنfrom شُربِهاdrinking it
I would have cast off فيin هَذاthis النَهارthe day عِذاريmy bridle
Had fasting not kept me from drinking it,
If not for fasting holding me back
I would have cast off my bridle this day.
I would have shed my modesty today
لَوif كانَwas يُمكنُit is possible أَنto يُعارbe lent أَعَرتُهُI would lend it
وَأَصومُand I fast شَهراًa month فيin مَكانplace of نَهارِa day
If it could be lent, I would lend it,
If only I could borrow its bareness
And I would fast a month in place of a day.
And fast a month in daylight's place
لَكنbut تَرَكتُI have forgone سُرورَهits joy وَمُدامَهand its wine
حَتّىuntil أَكونَI am لَدَيهِin its presence ذاpossessing إِفطارِbreaking the fast
But I have forgone its joy and its wine,
But I left its joy and its cup
Until I am there with my fast broken.
So I can break fast with it
وَنُديرُهاand we pass it round فيin الكَأسthe cup بَينَamong نَواهدٍfull-breasted maidens
تَجلوdispel الهُمومthe cares بِنَغمةwith the melody of الأَوتارِthe strings
And we pass it round in the cup among full-breasted maidens,
And we will pass it around in a cup amidst gazelles
Who dispel cares with the melody of strings.
Who dispel sorrows with the melody of strings
فَجُفونُهاfor their eyelids تُغنيكsuffice for you عَنinstead of أَكواسهاtheir cups
وَخُدودُهاand their cheeks تُغنيكsuffice for you عَنinstead of أَزهارِflowers
For their eyelids spare you the need for their cups,
For their eyelids sing to you instead of cups
And their cheeks spare you the need for flowers.
And their cheeks sing to you instead of flowers
