مَنwho فيamong البَريّةcreation مِنfrom رداهُits deadly harm يُجارُis sheltered
Death's arrow—where is there escape from it?
Who among creation is shielded from its deadly harm?
حكَمَdecreed الزَّمانTime عَلىupon الخَلائِقِcreatures بِالفَناto extinction
فَالدارُso the abode لاnot يَبقىremains بِهاin it دَيّارِa single inhabitant
Time has sentenced all creatures to extinction;
so not one inhabitant remains in this abode.
عِشlive ماas long as تَشاءُyou wish فَإنّfor indeed غايَتَكyour end الرَدىdeath
يَبلىwears away الزَمانTime وَتَذهَبand pass away الأَعمارُlifetimes
Live as long as you wish, for your end is death;
Time wears away, and lifetimes pass.
فَاِحذَرso beware مُسالَمَةَmaking peace with الزَمانTime وَأَمنَهand trusting it
إِنّindeed الزَمانTime بِأَهلهِtoward its people غَدّارُtreacherous
So beware of making peace with Time and trusting it;
indeed, Time is treacherous toward its people.
وَاِنظُرand look إِلىat الأُمَراءthe princes قَدalready سَكَنواthey settled in الثَرىthe dust
وَعَلَيهمand to them كَأسُthe cup of المنونِdeath تُدارِis passed around
And look at the princes: they have settled in the dust,
and the cup of death is passed around to them.

After silk, they have been pillowed on stones,
and over them lie the graves' coverings.

They were denied pavilions and lodged in the belly of the earth;
the fates decreed this for them.
لَمdid not تَنفَعavail الجُردُthe sleek-coated steeds الجِيادthe well-bred وَلاnor القَناthe lances
يَومَon the day of الرَدىdeath وَالعَسكَرُand the army الجَرّارُvast
Neither sleek, noble steeds nor lances availed
on the day of death—nor did the vast army.
فيin مَوتthe death of عَبدservant of الواحدthe One الملِكthe king الرّضىthe esteemed
لِجَميعto all أَملاكthe kings of الوَرىmankind إِنذارُa warning
In the death of Abd al-Wahid, the esteemed king,
there is a warning to all the kings of mankind:
أَنthat لَيسَnot يَبقىendures فيamong المُلوكthe kings مُمَلّكan enthroned king
إِلّاexcept أَتَتهcame to him مَنيّةٌdeath وَبَوارُand ruin
that no enthroned king among kings endures
but death and ruin come upon him.
نادَيتُهُI called to him وَالحُزنand grief خامرَpervaded مُهجَتيmy soul
وَالقَلبُand the heart فيهِin it لَوعةٌanguish وَأوارُand burning heat
I called out to him, while grief pervaded my soul,
and within my heart were anguish and burning heat.
ياO مَنyou who بِبَطنin the belly of الأَرضthe earth أَصبَحbecame آفلاًset
أَتَغِيبُdo they disappear? فيin بَطنthe belly of الثَرىthe earth الأَقمارُthe moons
O you who have set in the belly of the earth,
do moons disappear in the belly of the earth?
إِنّindeed الَّذينthose who عَهدتَyou knew صَفوَthe purity of وِدادهمtheir affection
هَلis there? فيهمُamong them بَعدَafter الرَدىdeath لَكَfor you جارُa protector
Indeed, those whose pure affection you once knew—
is any of them a protector for you after death?
تَرَكوكَthey left you فيin بَطنِthe belly of الثَرىthe earth وَتَشاغَلواand busied themselves
بِعُلاًwith glories سِواكother than you فَعُرفُهُمso their recognition إِنكارُdenial
They left you in the belly of the earth and busied themselves
with glories other than you; their recognition is now denial.
لَمّاwhen وَقَفتُI stood بِقَبرهat his grave مُتَرَحّماًpraying for mercy on him
بانَdeparted العَزاءُconsolation وَهاجَنيand stirred me اِستعبارُa rush of tears
When I stood at his grave, praying for mercy upon him,
consolation fled, and a rush of tears shook me.
فَبَكَيتُso I wept دَمعاًtears لَوif بَكَتwept بِمثالهِwith its like
غُرّbright السَحائبthe clouds لَمnot تَكُنbe أَمطارُrain
So I wept tears that, had their like been shed
by the bright clouds, would not have been rain.

O you who visit him, seek forgiveness for your king
from the King of kings, for He is ever-forgiving.
