بَكَرَت أُمَيَّةُ غُدوَةً بِرَهينِ
خانَتكَshe betrayed you إِنَّindeed القَينَthe smith غَيرُnot أَمينِtrustworthy
خانَتكَ إِنَّ القَينَ غَيرُ أَمينِ
Umayya set out at dawn, at Rahīn.
Umayya set out early one morning at Rahin.
She betrayed you—for indeed, the smith is not to be trusted.
She betrayed you; indeed, the smith is not trustworthy.
لاdo not تَحزُنينيgrieve me بِالفِراقِwith parting فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
لا تَحزُنيني بِالفِراقِ فَإِنَّني
لاnot تَستَهِلُّgush مِنَfrom الفِراقِparting شُؤونيmy tear ducts
لا تَستَهِلُّ مِنَ الفِراقِ شُؤوني
Do not make me grieve over the parting, for
Do not grieve me with parting, for
my tear ducts do not pour forth at separation.
My tear ducts do not gush at separation.
وَلَقَدand indeed أَرِبتُI overcame عَلىover الهُمومِcares بِجَسرَةٍon a sturdy she-camel
وَلَقَد أَرِبتُ عَلى الهُمومِ بِجَسرَةٍ
عَيرانَةٍstrong as a wild ass بِالرِدفِwith a rider behind غَيرِnot لَجونِbalking
عَيرانَةٍ بِالرِدفِ غَيرِ لَجونِ
Indeed, I have risen above my cares upon a sturdy she-camel,
And I have indeed overcome cares on a sturdy she-camel,
wild-ass-like in the haunches, never sluggish;
Strong as a wild ass with a rider behind, never balking,
شَرَفِيَّةٍSharaf-bred مِمّاof those that تُوارِدُreach water مَنهَلاًa watering place
شَرَفِيَّةٍ مِمّا تُوارِدُ مَنهَلاً
بِقَرينَةٍwith a companion أَوor غَيرِnot ذاتِhaving قَرينِa companion
بِقَرينَةٍ أَو غَيرِ ذاتِ قَرينِ
a Sharaf-bred one, of those that come in succession to a watering place,
Sharaf-bred, one of those that reach a watering place
alongside a companion, or alone without one.
With a companion, or without any companion.
تَأويshe comes إِلىto ذيone with جُدَّتَينِtwo stripes كَأَنَّهُas though he were
تَأوي إِلى ذي جُدَّتَينِ كَأَنَّهُ
كَرٌّa stout rope شَديدُtight العَصبِthe twisting غَيرُnot مَنينِworn thin
كَرٌّ شَديدُ العَصبِ غَيرُ مَنينِ
She seeks shelter with a two-striped male, as though he were
She comes to one with two stripes, as though he were
a stout well-rope, tightly twisted and unworn,
A tightly twisted rope, not worn thin.
أَوفىstood high عَلىon رُكنَينِtwo supports فَوقَabove مَثابَةٍa water-drawing platform
أَوفى عَلى رُكنَينِ فَوقَ مَثابَةٍ
عَنaway from جولِthe rim نازِحَةِfar-reaching الرِشاءِthe bucket-rope شَطونِdeep
عَن جولِ نازِحَةِ الرِشاءِ شَطونِ
raised high over two supports above a wellhead,
He stands high on two supports above a water-drawing platform,
from deep within a well where the water lies far down, its drawing-rope long.
Away from the rim of a deep well with a long bucket-rope.
