لَعَمرُكَBy your life ماnot مَلَّتshe wearied of ثَواءَthe stay of ثَوِيَّهاher guest
حَليمَةُHalima إِذwhen أَلقَتshe cast مَراسِيَthe anchors of مِقعَدِa bedridden man
By your life, she did not weary of her guest's stay—
By your life, she did not neglect the comfort of her baby
Halima—when she cast a bedridden man's anchors.
Halima, when she let go of her comfortable seat
وَلَكِنand yet تَلَقَّتshe welcomed بِاليَدَينِwith both hands ضَمانَتيmy infirmity
وَحَلَّand made camp بِشَرجٍat Sharj مِنَfrom القَبائِلِthe tribes عُوَّديmy sickbed visitors
And yet she welcomed my infirmity with both hands,
Rather she took him into her hands as a guarantee
And my visitors from the tribes made camp at Sharj.
And a number of tribes gathered around her, obedient to her
وَقَدand indeed غَبَرَتshe spent شَهرَيthe two months of رَبيعٍRabi‘ كِلَيهِماboth of them
بِحَملِin bearing البَلاياhardships وَالحِباءِand bounty المُمَدَّدِprolonged
And she spent both months of Rabi‘
She spent two spring months with him
Bearing hardships and the burden of continued giving.
Bearing hardships and extended love
وَلَمand not تُلهِهاdistract her تِلكَthose التَكاليفُburdens إِنَّهاindeed she is
كَماjust as شِئتَyou wished مِنin أُكرومَةٍnobility وَتَخَرُّدِand maidenly modesty
And those burdens did not distract her; indeed, she is
Those responsibilities did not distract her
As you would wish, in nobility and maidenly modesty.
She was steadfast, no matter what you wished of her
هِيَshe اِبنَةُthe daughter of أَعراقٍancestral roots كِرامٍnoble نَمينَهاthey nurtured her
إِلىtoward خُلُقٍa character عَفٍّchaste بَرازَتُهُits distinction قَدِis sufficient
She is the daughter of noble roots that nurtured her
She is the daughter of noble roots that grew
To a chaste character, whose distinction suffices.
Into a virtuous character, the brilliance of which is clear
سَأَجزيكِI shall repay you أَوor يَجزِيكِwill repay you عَنّيon my behalf مُثَوِّبٌone who rewards
وَقَصرُكِand enough for you أَنthat يُثنىpraise be offered عَلَيكِupon you وَتُحمَديand you be praised
I shall repay you, or one who rewards will repay you on my behalf;
I will reward you, or someone will reward you on my behalf
And it is enough for you to be extolled and praised.
It is enough that you be praised and lauded
فَإِنso if يُعطَare granted مِنّاfrom us القَومُthe people نَصبِرwe endure وَنَنتَظِرand we await
مِنىhopes of عَقِبٍa succeeding turn كَأَنَّهاas though they were ظِمءُan interval between waterings مَورِدِa watering place
So if the people are favored at our expense, we endure and await
If people give us hardship, we will be patient and wait
A hoped-for turn, like the interval between visits to a watering place.
For a future reward, as though it were a long-awaited rain
وَإِنand if نُعطَwe are granted لاnot نَجهَلwe act rashly وَلاand not نَنطُقُwe utter الخَناfoul speech
وَنَجزِand we repay القُروضَdebts أَهلَهاthose owed them ثُمَّthen نَقصِدِwe keep within bounds
And if we are favored, we neither act rashly nor utter foul speech;
If we are not given anything, we will not act ignorantly or complain
And we repay debts to those owed them, then keep within bounds.
We will repay debts, then set out with purpose
لاdo not تُظهِرَنever make public ذَمَّcondemnation of اِمرِئٍa man قَبلَbefore خُبرِهِknowing him
وَبَعدَand after بَلاءِtesting المَرءِthe man فَاِذمُمthen condemn أَوِor اِحمَدِpraise
Never voice condemnation of a man before knowing him;
Do not reveal the flaws of a person before his story is known
And after testing the man, condemn or praise.
And after the person's trial, then blame or praise as deserved
