Slow down—may you be free of curses—you have strayed from the right course.

For one like me should not be met with rejection.

Your land, if you follow the right path, is my land, and indeed she is

My kin, my loved ones, and the most precious thing I have.

My love is for her; I have not strayed from my pledge to love her.

And far be it from one like me to stray from the pledge.

And how could I, when I have made her mistress of my whole soul?

And indeed, in love I conceal more than I reveal.

My love is for her; indeed, I have pledged my heart

To every span of land stretching across the Arab world.

To you all, to the desert, to the sand, to the hills,

To the Gulf's abundant waves, to the breeze from Najd,

To Mecca, to al-Batha, to al-Khayf of Mina,

To Sinai, to the Golan, to Jerusalem, to eternity,

To every vein pulsing within the Arab world,

And every heart that remembers God with praise.

To Tunisia, or to Algeria, to love

For our far-off Morocco, near despite the distance.

I swear, I have loved you with an ascetic's love,

And lovers' fiercest passions lie in renunciation.

And for your sake I hope for martyrdom in love,

So to God belongs what dear friends endure in affection!

Though my cradle was in Baghdad, I indeed

See your people as my people, and your cradle as mine.

“And am I anything but one of Ghaziyya? If she strays,

I stray; and if she follows the right path, my right path lies in hers.”

I swear, I have loved you with the love of one crazed with longing,

Who ransoms you with life, wealth, and children.

And is there any goal in love beyond giving one's life?

And do you have, in love, any part of what I have?

I swear, I have loved you with a monk's love,

Who believes that no love but love of God for God's sake avails.

And is there any goal in love beyond this love?

And do you have, by God, any part of what I have?
