The Unionists, when they ruled, were not true

To their promise of justice in government; instead, they oppressed.

They violated a plan they had drawn up,

And changed what had brought their subjects ease

Into misery, which they decreed should befall them.

And after proclaiming the constitution, they wasted no time

In becoming despots and breaking their oaths.

They did not safeguard the people's rights; instead, they tampered

With them, and broke the covenant of equality among us,

As though there had been neither covenant nor binding pledges.

They often held it over us that they had deposed

Abd al-Hamid and removed his yoke from us,

Established freedom and brotherhood among us,

    And begun granting us equality,

So that blessings and bounties might shade us.

We trusted them and were loyal to them, and upon

The fulfillment of their promises we all relied.

But in what they did we found no deed

To bear out their words; instead, they dashed our hopes.

And they demolished what we had built upon their constitution.

By deposing Abd al-Hamid, they did not uproot oppression,

But planted many times its like alongside it in our land.

They practiced every art of it they pleased; indeed, they invented

Ways of deceit for it, all novel contrivances.

And God will take vengeance on them for those deeds.

And the most atrocious sin whose door they opened

Was that blood which they poured out in slaughter:

I mean the Armenians' blood—the people who were slaughtered

Like ewes, though they neither betrayed nor committed any crime

Except their innocence of the charges brought against them.

They blamed Abd al-Hamid for shedding it, and those

With him; those whose judgment was weak believed them.

And God knows, and the angels bear witness, that

Abd al-Hamid is, in truth, far removed from it.

They afflicted the Arabs with calamities, as they did the Armenians.

And oppressed them, so they tasted woe and destitution.

And the Arabs are nobler than they in maternal and [apparently paternal] descent,

Yet under the rule of this state of theirs, they became a tail

To the vilest head, which even beasts shunned bearing.

The Turks were ungrateful for the Arabs' bounty,

And deliberately slighted their merit, leaving it unmentioned.

They confined their benevolence to those of their own stock,

While their harm spread through everyone else

As sickness spreads through an invalid's body.

And from the time they entered the war alongside Germany,

Though they had neither she-camel nor he-camel in it,

The Arabs answered their call as the battle blazed.

When summoned, they did not begrudge their lives,

And, as its deep sea swelled, they plunged into it with them.

Yet, while the blaze of war raged

They did not fear their Lord in treating them, as they should.

Who do not endure those who infringe their rights.

In peace they treated us neither justly nor gently,

And in battle they separated their soldiers from ours.

They invented a thousand excuses to justify their oppression of us.

    And how many of us they exiled, leaving them wretched;

And how many, how many they flung into the dark depths of prisons!

The injustice they committed engulfed Syria,

So Jerusalem cried out against it, and Aleppo complained.

They dyed its soil with the blood of its sons,

And even erected gallows in its squares.

And how many a martyr's neck they broke upon them!

This is some of what [unclear] befell the people of al-Sham.

With this I have contented myself, choosing brevity over a long account.

But it spread widely among the people,

Until Umm al-Qura heard news of it.

She was appalled by it, and the House and Sanctuary cried out.

Then the most noble al-Husayn, son of Ali, rose,

Defending his people with gleaming swords and spears.

And he cried out to Turkey: 'Uninvited guest, depart

From us; and you, her shadow, move away from our land,

And go where [unclear] has cast your [unclear].'

His lion-cubs charged with him; whenever they roared,

    Their Hijazis rushed to them.

They kindled war against the Turks and prevailed,

And pursued them until they scattered their necklace's beads

Out of their land, and severed the bonds of their monopoly on power.

And this is indeed the noblest uprising, cooling

The breasts of Qahtan's sons and gladdening

Thousands of souls rescued and saved through it.

And all mankind's tongues kept voicing praise

Of those who, through it, served religion and worldly life.

Before it, the Turks spread alarm and [apparently: fabricated]

What would have stirred fear in Islam, had they spoken truth.

They told us: 'The Allies have secretly agreed

To oppose Islam; indeed, they have begun

Pursuing what they have resolved to carry out.'

And when the Prophet's descendant joined the Allies

And took their side, he exposed this fabrication and denied it.

And the Muslims of the East, every one of them, recognized

This hypocrisy, gave it no heed, and instead turned away

From the slanderers, heedless of the accusations they hurled.

    The Unionists did not see what they had sought;

Instead, they reaped the worst of what they had sown among us.

They sought to divide us, but found

Us united against them—the opposite of their intent.

And wretched is the end of the people who oppressed!
