Is there a people among men finer in battle,

and nobler than my people at every lookout,

and better at riding sleek, noble steeds despite sore hooves,

into lance-points, among charging and swift-running mounts,

and better at riding the waves, in whose clashing

is death’s evening draught, from backs and shoulders,

and narrow-eyed, broad-chested ones, as though its backs

from sucking were milkers, though not milk-givers?

They have sorrow in every testing age.

Upon them are lions; whoever rouses them never recovers

when they lower their spears for the downward thrust.

We turned against Kisra the last strength of their seasoned force,

and their seasoned force is never famished amid calamities.
